"The document is not bilingual since tw4winmark style is not defined" Align error

Hi there,

I was trying to align two documents, but I got the following error: "The document is not bilingual since tw4winmark style is not defined."

Thus, the ainalign cannot be opened. I have checked and unchecked the Process files with tw4winmark box, but it still does not work. I have read all the posts available here (I have changed the docs to doc., odt., .rtf), but could not find any solution to this problem. I have SDL 2022.

Would you please be so kind as to assist me in this matter?

Thank you!

I haven't seen files like these for a while!

I guess the first thing would be to make sure you checked this box in your filetype settings before you created your project and in the template being used to create it?

  • Hi Paul,

Yes, as I mentioned, I already tried this, with the box checked and with the box unchecked and it still does not work. I have also checked the Word files, but they do not contain the respective style, I have changed the documents in the formats mentioned above, but nothing has worked so far. I still get that error. Other than this, is there anything else I could try?

You haven't mentioned the point I was trying to make... checked in the right template.  But I'll assume you did this correctly, so can I see your file?  You can send it to pfilkin at sdl dotcom if it's ok to share it.

    Hi Paul,

Yes, I have checked in the box with the right template. All of them are checked by default. I have tried to align other files also, but I get the same error. To me, it seems that Trados sees the documents as bilingual (but they are not) and since they do not have that style, it does not recognize them. I will send the files via email.

Well... I think I fell into the same trap you did. If you look in your filetype options you probably have this enabled and also above your Word files:

Trados Studio options window showing File Types list with a red arrow pointing to 'SDL XLIFF' filetype above 'HK' and 'SDL Trados Translator's Workbench' filetypes.

This is also a doc/docx filetype and if it's not disabled it seems that the align module will try to use it and then as the error says, it cannot find the tw4winMark style there so it throws an error.

If you disable the filetype, or move it below your Word filetypes, then you'll be able to align ok.  Making sure of course that you do this in your default template.

I'm not 100% sure why this occurs in alignment and not when you simply open the files for translation.  I suspect it's because the alignment module doesn't have the same failover mechanism as translating files does and so Studio gives up immediately and doesn't try to see if another filetype fits better.  Given this never used to be problem it could also be related to the fact the SDL TWB filetype is a legacy filetype and is now removed from the product unless you have the add-on installed from the appstore.

But the solution is simple in the end.  I hope that helps?
