Exception of Type Exception occurred: Problem when merging content of segment 1

I get this error message when trying to update from bilingual review. The solution in the SDL articles has worked in the past but not this time. I have re-exported the for bilingual review and copied the contents from the reviewed file to the newly created file. Still doesn’t work. I tried the combine method…not working.Trados Studio Task Results window showing an error message for 'Update from Bilingual Review' with status 'Failed (1 errors, 0 warnings)'. Error details: 'Exception of type Exception occurred: Problem when merging content of segment 1'.

What does segment #1 look like in the Word file?  Can we see a screenshot?

  • Hi

I'm having the same problem. I used EXPORT FOR BILINGUAL REVIEW to create a review doc in a project. The reviewer revised the translation in the bilingual review doc with Track Changes turned on. When I tried to use UPDATE FROM BILINGUAL REVIEW to import the reviewed doc, I received the same error as others: "Exception of type Exception occurred: Problem when merging content of segment 1."

I followed both workarounds recommended by you in your KB article, but I still get the same error. What else can I try? I'm stuck.

  • Hi  ,

Just letting you know that I managed to overcome the error and successfully update the Trados files using the UPDATE FROM BILINGUAL REVIEW function. I used a slightly modified version of the workaround in your KB article. Here's the procedure I used:

    1. Create a new job folder on the hard drive in a location that is NOT in SharePoint, Dropbox, or any other synchronized location. To keep the file path short, it's preferable to create the new job folder on the desktop.
    2. In the new job folder, create the following four subfolders:

    01 NewExport

02 BiRev (This is the returned reviewer Bilingual Review doc, processed by BR)

    03 NewPaste

    04 Combined

    1. In Trados, use Export for Bilingual Review to create a new bilingual review doc in the 01 NewExport folder.
    2. Copy the bilingual review doc provided by the reviewer into the 02 BiRev folder.
    3. Copy the newly created bilingual review doc in the 01 NewExport folder to the 03 NewPaste and 04 Combined folders.
    4. Start MS Word and open the docs in the 02 BiRev and 03 NewPaste folders.
    5. In MS Word, turn Track Changes off in the 03 NewPaste doc.
    6. Delete all content in the 03 NewPaste doc.
    7. Select all content in the 02 BiRev doc and paste it into 03 NewPaste doc.
    8. Delete the extra line added to the end of 03 NewPaste doc.
    9. Turn Track Changes on in the 03 NewPaste doc, then save and close the doc.
    10. Close the 02 BiRev doc.
    11. In MS Word, click Review > Compare > Combine.
    12. Choose the 04 Combined doc for Original Document and 03 NewPaste doc for Revised Document.
      1. Comparison Settings: Check all except Comments and Formatting.
      2. Show Changes At: Word level
      3. Show Changes In: Original document
    13. Click OK to run Combine.
    14. Verify that the reviewer's tracked changes have been incorporated. Save the combined doc as the one in the 04 Combined folder, and close the doc.
    15. Use Update from Bilingual Review to import the doc in the 04 Combined folder into Trados.
    16. In Trados, open the target doc in Editor view and verify that the changes have been incorporated.

I hope this may be of some use to others who may encounter this error.
