When I close Studio all my projects disappear from the Projects view and the custom project templates I added to the Setup/project templates also disappear

Every time I close Studio 2022, two things happen:
- all the projects in my Projects view disappear and I have to open them manually;
- the custom project templates I created and added to Studio setup (including the default one I had chosen) disappear from the list and Studio reverts to the original Default project template.
This is the configuration: in my computer, the folder My documents automatically points to a network drive (option imposed by my work that I cannot change). Once Studio was installed, I recreated all the Studio 2022 subfolder structure on the real C drive (not syncing or pointing to a network drive). I modified the Sdl.ProjectApi.xml file to make sure that projects are created in the correct LocalDataFolder. The projects.xml file is indeed in the Projects folder in the "real C" drive since that it where I saved the first project I created. In all my custom project templates, the project location is also the Projects folder in the real C drive.
If I try to rename the projects.xml file so that Studio creates a new one when I close it and reopen it, Studio does not create a new projects.xml file.
In fact, that file has not been modified for over three weeks, which makes me think that for whatever reason Studio is not able to access it and that is what is causing both problems. I checked the properties of the file and the folder that contains it and everything seems fine regarding access rights.
Any ideas what can be causing it and what the solution might be? Having to manually open all my projects and manually select my project templates every time I reopen Studio makes me waste a lot of time.
Thanks.
Beatriz

If your companys policy is to use the network drive, you are most probably not allowed to put these files on C:

I use OneDrive for My Documents folder on my computer, thus the folder Studio 2022/... is located on the OneDrive and this does not make any trouble. This said, I do NOT locate any project files there.  Only the file called projects.xml (located in ...\Studio 2022\Projects\) is there. And this is the file responsible for keeping track of your projects AND project templates. So try to use the cloud and see, if that helps.

  • Hi Jerzy. Thanks for your quick reply. We can put these files on C:. I am in fact configuring Studio for many translators and the setup (putting all those files on the C) works for them, it seems to be just me.
We had too many bugs and errors when we tried to work on the Documents folder where Studio had created Studio 2022, because of the fact that the whole Document folder is automatically redirected to a personal network drive (not OneDrive/Sharepoint or anything on the Cloud, just a network drive).
I just tried moving the projects.xml file to OneDrive (although is not something that I would like to do) and still no luck. The same problem persists.

This is strange. Having the projects.xml on a network drive can be problematic, as the connection to a network drive is not available just immediately after Windows starts.

Have you installed Studio on your machine as admin? I always do that. Unfortunately I have no clue, what can be causing your problem.

  • ,

Could it be that there is more than one Sdl.ProjectApi.xml file in your PC?

I've actually got two Sdl.ProjectApi.xml files, possibly due to old Trados Studio versions not fully uninstalled These are the paths:

    • C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio17\Sdl.ProjectApi.xml
    • C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\ProjectApi\15.1.0.0\Sdl.ProjectApi.xml

Could you search for all Sdl.ProjectApi.xml instances and confirm that you have edited the right XML, the one with the Studio17 folder?

  • Thanks Jesús. I can confirm that I only have that one Sdl.ProjectApi.xml installed. This was a clean install in a new computer where there was no previous version of Studio. At this point I´ve tried everything, so I will uninstall and clean reinstall Studio and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks.

  • Hi Jerzy. I have a question for you regarding your use of OneDrive and Studio. Up to now, we had all the Studio files (including project files, memories, and so on) on the default My Documents/Studio 2022 folder. Even though we have a OneDrive account (that we can access via the web or via the Windows Explorer if we link our computer to OneDrive), the Documents folder was not synchronized by default  and we could decide if we wanted to link our computer to our OneDrive account and if so, which folders or subfolders to sync. Without any warning from our organization, some colleagues had their full Documents/Desktop/Images folders extracted from the C drive and put in OneDrive fully synchronized. We work with project templates and once everything has been moved, Studio can´t find our resources. We have tried different methods to put back the Studio 2022 folder back into C:\Users\[username]\Documents and then unlink the computer from OneDrive. However, there is a C:\Users\[username]\OneDrive - XXXX\Documents folder that remains after unlinking the computer, that contains an almost empty Studio 2022 folder, with just the Project Templates folder and the sdltpl files that come with it. If we delete that folder, then Studio won´t open, and it will automatically recreate that folder. Is there any way to avoid that?  We would really want to go back to have all Studio files on our C/User/Documents/Studio 2022 usual place. From what you say, that is how you work, the default files that came with Studio stay in your OneDrive (default Project templates?, projects.xml) but all your real files (memories, projects, termbases, custom project templates...) are somewhere else outside of OneDrive. Did you run into problems with that configuration? Lost of data, slowness...? I thought the use of OneDrive or a network drive is not recommended for Studio.
It is possible that, as you mention, once the organization moved those folders to OneDrive, we are not allowed to put them back on the C.

Some translators have been trying relentlessly for two days to get things back to what we had before without success, so any advice is welcome.

    Dear Bea

This is more a Windows than a Studio problem. As it seems, someone has produced a mess with your Libraries on your computer. You can move Windows folder like Documents to any location you wish. To do so, right click the said folder and chose "Properties" (my screenshots are in German, but this works in all languages the same way):

When you go to Path there, you can move the folder to a location of your wish:

Please check, where does your Documents folder go to. From my knowledge, Studio will always use this Document folder and create its subfolder there.

  • Thank you so much Jerzy. Indeed, it was pointing to OneDrive, even though we had already unlink the computer and we had never chose that in the first place. Your tip allowed us to finally put back all the Studio files where we wanted and stop Studio from creating new files in OneDrive. It also allowed us to better understand other problems we had been having related to that. So Sincere THANKS.

  • Hi, I don't know if this applies to your situation but all my projects kept disappearing from the Projects Window and i stumbled upon this solution:

Click on File in the menu bar

Click on Project  Settings Configuration  on the left

Make sure all the Filters settings in the Projects box on the left are set to "Show all proiects" instead of "in progress" or  "marked as completed".

I've been struggling with that problem for months and the above steps fixed it immediately. I don't know how the setting got changed in the first place, maybe I hit one of those (obnoxious and superfluous) preprogrammed keystroke combinations.

For the designers: BTW, I would recommend providing a minimum of such preprogrammed  combinations, since users can easily program their own in Options and if you hit a combination by accident it's very hard to figure out what suddently went wrong

  • Thanks for your suggestion William. I can confirm that I don´t have any filters applied.  Unfortunately reinstalling Studio didn´t fix the problem either.
