Dear community,
when I create translation packages for external translation, their size is usually the same as of the original file, therefore emailing doesn´t work for the big ones.
Last week I had a 105 Mb doc, and the package I sent to the agency was 99 Mb. However, when the agency returned the package, it weighed 5 Mb only. How is that possible?

It can be… The package you send is big mostly because of the TMs and TBs attached. If you open the target folder, you can check how big the XLIFF is (click on the button Explore Containing Folder in the ribbon). Usually, for small- and medium-sized files, the Original file itself is embedded to the XLIFF, but there is a threshold. If this threshold (20 MB by default) is exceeded, then the XLIFF is not that big.
On the other hand, the return package doesn’t include any resources, like TMs, so it’s always smaller than the package sent.
But if I remove all the sources in the Project configuration tab before I create the package, then they are not attached, right?
You are right, if you remove resources from the project settings, they won’t be included in the package you create.
Alternatively, and a better approach from my understanding, you can untick the resources you don’t want to include at the final step of the package creation wizard:
As seeing is believing, you can confirm that if you make a copy of the package, then change the extension sdlppx to zip, unzip it and have a look at the folders Termbases and Tm:
Great, you are a genius, Jesús! The first option, yes, good for checking and I remember I unticked both options mentioned. However, the second one is a real gem!!!! I followed the steps and, true, no TM or TDB was included:

So now the question is: how to make the package smaller? Not attach the original? But in this case translators will not be able to consult graphic information, needed for a better understanding of some concepts, document structure, etc.

To make XLIFFs smaller, you can set zero as the maximum size of the embedded file in your Project Settings:
The drawback is that your translators receiving the package won’t be able to generate directly the target Word file, but if they needed to, you can deliver the Word file itself to them.
But in this case translators will not be able to consult graphic information, needed for a better understanding
To create even smaller packages, instead of adding the original Word file, you can create a PDF from the Word file and add it as a Reference to the project itself or attach it along the package. Note that the PDF is smaller than the original Word file.
I know, it’s a compromise! File size vs features!
