I have pressed Completed on my project before saving the file. Now, obviously, I cannot open the project anymore to retrieve the files. Is there any way around it?

Yes... use "Revert to SDLXLIFF". If you double click the files in the project you should have been prompted to do this anyway:
But if not, right-click your file and select the same command.
