Language selection is correct in settings (FR>US ENG). But both the target and the source are appearing in French! The text is exactly the same on both sides. But I want it to appear in US Eng on the right, not in French! I want a translation, not a copy.

Paul means that maybe when this project was set up, the following (non-default) option was ticked:
This setting copies all the source text into the target during project set-up. It is very useful if there is a lot of content that would be a pain to have to type out or insert, numbers or tags for example. You can then translate the text around that content, deleting as you go.
It is possible to remove the text from the whole file in one go, if it is really bothering you but just hitting Alt+Del as you start each a new segment is easiest, especially if there are already some pretranslated texts you want to keep in the file.
