Studio cannot open a sdlxliff file

Hi there,

I already raise the issue a couple of years ago, but the problem is still there, despite the updates that were released in-between.

Error message in Trados Studio indicating failure to open a file due to an invalid hexadecimal character in the comments section.

It may be very frustrating when you just completed a 6,000  words translation and cannot open your file anymore.

Fortunately, I know how to fix the issue, but it is not something everybody knows how to do.

The issue happens when you copy and paste some text in a segment's comment, essentially from a Web page. The text may contain some hexadecimal characters, typically for symbols.

Those unwanted characters stand in the Comments section of the file (see below).

Comments are located (and hopefully protected) between a pair of tags <Comment...>MyBlahBlah</Comment>. Nothing of what is inside such pair of tags is supposed to be interpreted as commands and interfere with file processing.
Thus, I think one can call a bug the fact it happens.

Would it be possible for RWS engineers to investigate and fix that issue?

For those who may experiment that issue, here is how to solve the problem:

Find your translated sdlxliff file in your project folder (the subfolder of your target language).
First of all, make a backup copy of it, just in case.

Then, open your sdlxliff file in an editor such as Notepad++ (free, on line).

The comments are in what is numbered as line 1 (even if that line 1 that can actually be 10,000s of characters long and display on many lines).

Comments as such appear between <Comment...> and </Comment> tags, in a distinct color (in black, below):

Then search the character that causes the issue, and remove it manually. There may be more than one of it.

Close-up view of the sdlxliff file's comments section in Trados Studio, highlighting the hexadecimal characters that need to be removed to fix the file opening issue.

You should not have to fear any issue as long as you ONLY work in the black text. Don't touch anything else.

Once you're sure you did not left any of them, save your file, and try to open it again in Studio. It should work.

Hope that helps

Philippe
