Start menu icon vs. tile icon of SDL Trados Studio 2019 in Windows 10

Hello! While experimenting with Start menu and tiles in Windows 10 I noticed that although the SDL Trados Studio 2019 icon in Start menu is green and white, when I add it to the start area, the tile icon is black and white. All other tiles icons look exactly the same as the Start menu icons of the corresponding programs. Just Trados tile icon is different. I tried to change the icon in the properties but it doesn't change. It's not a big problem but I am used to the green icon and it would look better among other tiles.

This is how the tile icon looks like on my PC.

I'm not really sure how to fix this so here's a what looks like a sensible idea from ChatGPT... try clearing the icon cache. To do this:

    • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type "%localappdata%" (without quotes) and hit Enter.
    • Locate the "IconCache.db" file, and delete it.
    • Restart your computer.

See if that helps.  I also asked about possible side effects so you could take a backup copy of your IconCache.db before you delete it in case you do have behaviour that is unacceptable to you.

Clearing the icon cache generally doesn't cause any major issues, but there are a few minor side effects you might notice:

    1. Temporary slow loading of icons: When you delete the icon cache, Windows needs to recreate it by fetching the icons for each program and file type again. This process may temporarily slow down the loading of icons, especially right after a system restart. However, once the cache is rebuilt, the icons should load normally.

    2. Icon arrangement: In some cases, clearing the icon cache may cause the desktop icons to rearrange themselves. If you have a specific arrangement of icons, you might need to manually reorganize them after clearing the cache.

    3. Rare icon display issues: In very rare cases, clearing the icon cache might cause some icons not to display correctly or appear as generic icons. This issue usually resolves itself as Windows rebuilds the cache, or you can try clearing the cache again if the problem persists.

Overall, clearing the icon cache is a low-risk procedure and is often recommended as a troubleshooting step for various icon-related issues. The side effects are generally minor and temporary.

  • Thank you, Paul. Before I do that, could you please check how this tile icon looks on your PC? You didn't mention that so I guess it is green as it should be, but I just would like to double check.

Nope... I have no idea how to use all those windows menus and I tend to keep it simple so work with the keyboard more than all the windows features.  The more Windows tries to "help" me the more I dislike it!  Getting old I guess!

Maybe someone else who works with these features can oblige?
