Trados studio 2022 keeps freezing

Hi all.

For weeks, my Trados Studio 2022 Professional (Trados Studio 2022, 17.0.6.14902) keeps freezing. In fact, when I type a translation, it stops and works on "something" - in the mean time I have to wait and wait. This happens also when try to search by concordance. When this happens, the concordance, translation results fields etc. are white (blank/empty) and flashing. Segments are all “blocked”, whatever I click, nothing happens. This goes on for minutes and keeps wasting my time.

To resolve this issue, I’ve read Alison’s advice in “Studio 2021 shutdown with pptx file” post and did as advised there (https://community.rws.com/product-groups/trados-portfolio/f/licensing/36138/studio-2021-shutdown-with-pptx-file/135267). It worked for a while, but now I am back to waiting for Trados to stop flashing and start working.

I’ve also read advice in the “Trados Studio crashes without an error message” post (https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0032954). I found especially useful advice on repairing the Studio installation under point 2: 2. Repair your Studio installation. Workaround 1 from this article: Repairing your installation of Trados Studio. This too worked for a while, I thought that everything will be ok, but no, I am back with my problems.

I’ve also contacted technical support at my local Trados dealer: they advised that something must be wrong with certain plug-ins. To find out which plug-in is causing problems, we discontinued all of them that I’ve previously uploaded from SDL/RWS app store. This helped, again, for a while.

Since the problem persisted, I deleted all old versions of Trados that I could foind in my computer (I use Trados from the old Trados 2007 version, till now I purchased several updates), together with the most current one, TS 2022. In this process, I’ve restarted my computer several times. After all versions were deleted from my computer, I’ve restarted it again. Only when the computer was really cleared of all Trados things, I’ve installed TS2022 back. With no plug-ins. Nothing extra. Only TS2022 as it is.

And the problem persists. I keep waiting and waiting for this freezing to stop. I am on the brink of insanity with this TS2022. Nerd

Is there any solution for this? Thank you for any valuable advice. Blush

Thank you for your detailed post and for outlining what you have already tried.

When users are concerned over "performance" as a general term, I think about: TM's & Project Files & locations

Other areas to clarify include PC spec and if you have upgraded/maintained your TM's. Please see here for further details

To help understand further please can you confirm:

    1. Where are your TM saved to?
    2. Where are your  projects saved to?
    3. Do you find this "freezing" happening to all projects?
    4. How many TM's do you work with and are the implicated in all of your projects?
    5. What happens if you disable your TM (s) it for a period of time?
I am keen to know if you disable your TM's do you find Editor navigation between segments smoother and most importantly does it solve your claim of it freezers and stops?

    Looking forward to your clarifications

  • Hi Lydia, thank you for your response. Here are my clarifications:

    1. Actually, nothing changed regarding my TMs, they are in the very same folder as of the beginning of my use of Trados and later Trados Studio.
    2. As for my projects, they are saved in separate folders in my working C: disk. The same as from the beginning, rather than in the “Trados folders”, created by the system, I keep them in separate folders and subfolders where I keep all my Word, Excel, PDF etc. working files as well as sdlxliffs together with Trados projects (in folders by clients).
    3. Yes, this is happening to all projects. It started out of nowhere with a certain huge project. At first, I thought that huge project is too complicated or complex regarding its creation, but I could not change anything since it was client’s project (direct big client, not LSP/translation agency). But later I found out that the problem persists with all my projects (I’ve created them).
    4. I work with several TMs, but not too many, for example up to 5/project no more. I don’t think this could be the problem. These TMs are not new, I work with them for years. No, not all TMs, that I regularly use, are implicated in all of my projects, some yes, but definitely not all.
    5. I haven’t tried disabling some TMs. But since not all or better say: the same TMs are not used in all projects, I find it hard to believe that certain TM would start causing such problems. I use different TMs in different projects (different by client and/or language combination) but all projects have the same issue.

  • Everything you wrote, Lektorca Purkat, applies to my case as well, which I solved by reverting to previous CU5 release.

You didn't give us the specs of your PC. But as you state, you put TMs and projects obviously on the drive C:, which is also used by Windows. Should the free space of this drive be less than 10%, Windows will be working badly and this can be the cause of your problems. Other cause of your problems can be an older system. Should your processor be older than five years (regardless the type) or a i3 older than one or two years, problems are to be expected. Studio is a very "hungry" program. Same applies to the HDD. Is this a SSD drive? If not and your PC is a laptop, I'm afraid it is not anymore suitable to run Studio.

  • Thank you Jerzy for your reply. I checked my data and these are as follows:

    1. C: drive: in total: 459 GB, available: 96.8 GB. It is not the best, but it is not bad either. Right?

    2. I have no idea how old my processor is. In Task Manager, it reads as: Intel(R) Core/TM) i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz. Is this ok?

    3. In Task Manager, I can see there is a SSD drive.

    4. No, I do not work on laptop. I work on a PC that is under my desk. To be able to also work remotely (when I am out of the office), I always use my laptop to connect to my PC under the desk (it serves me as a server).

BTW, when I installed Trados Studio 2022, everything worked fine. This problem persists for 1 or 2 weeks now. Before coming here, I tried to find a solution by myself. Since I ran out of ideas, well, I am here... :)

Thank you. The free space on your HDD is enough. However, your processor is about 5 or 6 years old. It should be sufficient, but there might be other factors limiting this.

If everything worked fine after installing S2022, not your PC and not the program itself are the problem. Please check:

    • Installed plugins. The best would be to remove them all and install anew.
    • Try to reset window layout via menu View.
    • Change your user profile to another default one via Setup -> Manage user profiles.

    This could help.

  • Thank you Jerzy for your valuable input.

However, when I contacted technical support at my local Trados dealer, they suggested that there might be something wrong with the plug-ins. We discontinued them all. As I explained in my initial post, I do not have any plug-ins right now. Only TS2022 as it is. I do miss those plug-ins that I worked with but I have no intention to install them before this problem is resolved.

The window layout was reset by the technical support at my Trados dealer, together with other steps, it worked for a while, but then this freezing returned. Just to be sure, I did this again.

Ok, I changed my user profile to Trados – this one I found in the system. I haven’t done this before. I hope it helps.
