CombiNumerals font not displayed correctly in editor

Hi,

we have an issue with the display of a specific font (CombiNumerals) for Greek characters in Studio editor. Instead a square character is displayed.

The source file format is idml.

The problem occurs in all version of Studio on one specific computer only. The computer runs on Windows 11.

On several other computers (Windows 10, Windows 11, several versions of Studio), there is no issue with this font.

All computers are usually set up the same way.

Actions already taken:

Font deinstalled and re-installed several times, no change.

Tried all version from Studio 2019 to 2022 on this computer, all show the same result.

We have tried all three options of the format display in the Studio options. Here the way the square character is displayed varies slightly, but none of these options show the correct characters.

We have not installed the Greek language in Windows, as this is also not installed on other computers.

Anyone any idea, what could solve this issue. RWS Support can't help, they think it's an issue with the operating system. But what's different on this one computer?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Johannes

It's possible that there might be some specific settings or configurations on the problematic computer that are causing the issue with the font display. Maybe try these steps to see if they help you to resolve the issue:

    1. Language settings: Even though you mentioned that the Greek language is not installed on other computers, it's worth trying to install it on the problematic computer to see if it makes a difference. Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language, click "Add a language," and select Greek.

    2. Clear font cache: Sometimes, the font cache may become corrupted, leading to issues with font display. Clear the font cache by following these steps:

      a. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type %localappdata% and press Enter. b. Navigate to the "Microsoft\Windows\Fonts\Cache" folder. c. Delete all files within the Cache folder. d. Restart your computer.

    3. Check for system updates: Ensure that the problematic computer has the latest Windows updates installed. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and click "Check for updates."

    4. Reset Studio settings: You can try resetting the Studio settings to default by following these steps:

      a. Close Studio.
      b. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type %appdata% and press Enter.
      c. Navigate to the "Trados\Trados Studio" folder.
      d. Rename the folder corresponding to the version of Studio you're using (e.g., "Studio17" for Studio 2022) to something like "Studio17_old."
      e. Re-launch Studio. This will generate a new folder with default settings.

    5. Compare system configurations: Since the issue occurs only on one specific computer, you can compare its system configurations with a working computer to identify any differences. Use the "systeminfo" command in a Command Prompt on both computers, and compare the output to see if there are any discrepancies.
      a. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type cmd and press Enter.
      b. Type systeminfo and press Enter.

If none of these steps help, you may consider doing a clean installation of Windows 11 on the problematic computer. However, this should be your last resort, as it will erase all your data and applications. Make sure to back up your important files before proceeding.

  • Hi Paul,

thanks a lot for your extensive and detailed reply.

Unfortunately, none of the possible solutions is working, no matter what we do, the characters are not displayed correctly.

We have not yet done a clean installation of Windows 11, as this would mean, to set up the computer from scratch.

I would like to avoid that.

So I'm waiting and hoping for some other hint that could be helpful for us. Anyone any idea in the community?

    Regards,

    Johannes,

Do the Studio Custom Language Fonts settings under File>Options>Editor>Font Adaptation look the same on the specific computer as on all the others?

    For example:

Trados Studio options menu showing Font Adaptation settings with minimum and maximum font size set to 12, adapt text colors checked, and custom language fonts set to Greek (Greece) with default font.

and are the Source and Target languages the same also:

Trados Studio options menu showing Default Languages settings with Source Language set to German (Germany) and Target Language set to English (United Kingdom), and a checked option to prompt for document languages.

I'm sure you've already checked this, but just in case not...

    All the best

  • Hi Alison,

thanks a lot for looking into this issue and for sending your proposal for the solution of our problem. Yes, we had checked this before, rechecked it again, but this does not work either.

Not the entire document is Greek, only a few characters, which are used as placeholders in the file (from a conversion from InDesign files), use these Greek characters. And the are only displayed as boxes, the same box for all different characters.

    Johannes

    Hi Johannes,

Ah, so neither Source nor Target language is Greek... Maybe that makes a difference... Paul?

The cause could be due to that particular computer and its software, as set up at the factory, in the 'construct' of the computer or some component thereof. Years ago, I set up some incoming new PCs and I found out that you could buy a batch of 'identical' PC's on the same day, from the same supplier and yet they could be quite different when you compared the background settings, which translated upwards to the subtler differences between the behaviour of the same software set up the same way on the different PCs.

Do you have InDesign on the PC? If so, how do these characters appear in the InDesign document?

If you copy and paste these characters from the Studio Target into a Word document on the PC you're having problems with, how do they appear?

The boxes indicate that the software cannot render the characters/find the font to make the characters appear as they should. This would normally indicate that the font 'CombiNumerals' is not installed on the PC or that the version on the PC is incomplete. Have you tried copying the font from the Windows fonts folder on a PC where the characters work OK over to the PC where they don't?

Lots of questions... probably no help. An interesting scenario. Paul, would there be a possibility that someone from tech support would be able to solve this remotely?

    Good luck!
