Number Formatting

Hello,

do you know where I can find the settings for number formatting under Studio 2014?

We need it for decimals and digit grouping symbols. This is a language specific setting (space, dots, nothing?). There are also cases in which a language has it in different manners (or the client just wants it differently). This is why we need to change this. I cannot find this setting.Thank you for your help.

Regards,

  • I have always thought Studio took the wrong approach to number and date formatting.

Studio only lets you choose from a small number of formats even though it has code that accesses the Region and Language settings and is flexible enough to translate whatever it finds there into its own rules for number and date formats.

Excel does the same thing -- but the developers said to themselves: "Our code to translate these settings is so flexible, why not enhance the user interface to allow users to make full use of that flexibility to define their own custom format?"

Miriam is just the latest example of a user who would occasionally like to use the flexibility inherent in Studio's code to define their own custom formats.

I would add custom number and date formats as an "Idea", but I think SDL is fully aware by now that this would be an improvement -- for some people, some of the time. (Like the recognition of Austrian dates -- it doesn't work, but how many people actually use Austrian instead of German as their language setting? -- obviously a low priority!).

It all boils down to priority.

Should SDL handle low priority issues before they have handled the many, many problems that appear to affect all users, all the time?

For example, I am happy that someone is (apparently) developing a Studio cleaner tool that will wipe every last trace of Studio from my computer.

Looking at all the pleas for help from people who are unable to solve their bizarre problems by uninstalling and reinstalling Studio, I worry that I might be the next user unexpectedly hit with an unsolvable problem due to no fault of my own that makes me think of switching translation tools.

So I am happy to live with a few other problems in the meantime. (Well, not "happy", but I can live with it ...)
