Cannot open the exported file

Hi

I finished translating a Word file using Trados Studio 2022 then exported it, but when I try to open the exported file, the Word gives me a message that it encountered error and cannot open the file: check if you have access to the file, do you have enough memory and drive space, use text recovery converter.

The original Word file has a lot of images and two columns; one for original language and the other for translation.

I'm assuming the problem is with the style format of the file.

I tried opening the file with another Word equivalent app, changing the font, the file encoding setting, restarting the laptop, but none of it worked.

I'm using Trados Studio 2022 17.0.6.14902.

Can anybody help me open this file?

Thanks,

Kai

    A few ideas...

    1. **Check the Basic Requirements:**
Ensure you have enough memory and hard drive space as Word suggested. If your drive is nearly full or your computer is running many heavy tasks simultaneously, it can prevent files from opening correctly.
    2. **Check the File Path:**
Ensure that the file is located in a directory that you have permission to access. If it's in a restricted directory, you might not be able to open it. Try moving it to a different location, such as your Desktop or Documents folder, and opening it from there.
    3. **Check File Extension:**
Ensure the file extension is correct. Word files are usually .docx or .doc. If it's something different, try changing it to .docx and see if that helps.
    4. **Use Word's Recovery Feature:**
Word has a feature that attempts to recover text from a damaged file. You can try this by opening Word, going to File > Open, and then rather than just clicking on the file, click on the dropdown arrow next to the Open button and select 'Open and Repair'.
    5. **Re-export the File from Trados Studio:**
It's possible that there was an error during the export process from Trados Studio. Try to re-export the file and see if you can open the newly exported version.
    6. **Check Trados Studio Settings:**
There might be a specific setting in Trados Studio that is causing an incompatibility with Word. Check if there are any settings related to the exported file format and ensure they are set correctly.
    7. **Use a different version of Word**
It's possible you have a different version of Word than the one that was used to create the original source file.  It may be worth checking with your customer and just see whether they can open the file themselves. It shouldn't make a difference but I have seen this happen before.
    8. **Use a Different Word Processing Program:**
If you have access to another word processing program such as Google Docs or OpenOffice, try opening the file with one of those to see if the issue is specifically with Word.

If you've tried all of these steps and you're still having trouble, there might be a more complex issue at play. Come back and let us now and we can engage technical support if needed.

  • Hi Paul,

Thank you so much for your very elaborate suggestions. I tried everything you suggested; I created a copy of the original Word file, imported it into Trados, did everything from scratch and export it again, I was able to open this newly exported file. Thanks again for taking time to respond to my post.
