MS Word spell checker does not work. It is impossible to activate it.

Hello.

MS Word spell checker does not activate. Every time I try to use it, I get an error. It simply says "Error loading the DLL library". The Hunspell dictionary is very poor and for me it is a serius issue not being able to use the MS Word spell checker.

i use Trados Studio 2022 - 17.0.6.14902 and I have a Microsoft 365 subscription so my MS Word is always up to date.

Please help!

Information dialog box showing error message: Unable to select spell checker extension. Error loading the DLL library. Error code 0x80029C4A.

The error message indicates a problem with the COM (Component Object Model) object of Microsoft Word. Essentially, this is a communication issue between Trados Studio and your installation of Microsoft Word. This problem might be caused by an incomplete or damaged installation of Microsoft Office. To fix this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. **Repair Microsoft Office**: Go to 'Control Panel' > 'Programs and Features', find your Microsoft Office installation in the list of installed programs, right-click on it and select 'Repair'. Please note that this might vary a bit depending on your version of Windows and Office. After the repair process, restart your computer and check if the problem persists.
    2. **Reinstall Microsoft Office**: If the repair didn't help, consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Microsoft Office. After reinstalling, again make sure that it's updated to the latest version.
    3. **Registry fix**: If none of the above solutions work, you might need to fix the registry. The error message you're seeing, {xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx}, appears to be a CLSID (Class Identifier), a globally unique identifier that Windows uses to identify software components, without having to know their names on disk. CLSIDs are used for things like the creation of objects and the invocation of methods from software libraries. In this context, it looks like there's an issue with an object or method associated with this CLSID. The most common cause is that the software or DLL associated with this CLSID is either missing or not registered properly with the Windows Registry.

I think repairing Office should fix it and you shouldn't have to get into registry fixes. You should probably get technical help if you're not comfortable playing with the registry yourself.  Any changes to the registry should be made with caution, as mistakes can cause serious issues with your system.  Always backup your data before making changes to the registry.

  • Thanks, Paul.

I uninstalled Office and tried to activate Word spellchecker. As may be expected, it threw a different error stating that "The file could not be found".

I installed MS Office again, tried to activate Word spellchecker, and original issue reappeared. Reading the error, I believe that the library is actually found but for some reason it cannot be loaded. I wonder if there is some permissions issue or some dependecies issue.

I will try to find the ID in the registry.

I hope you can help me with any other ideas on the possible solution.

    Good day!

  • Trados switched to Hunspell and threw the same error after a Microsoft Office update (possibly also a .net update).

Solution 1 worked well for me on two different occasions.
