TM abbreviation list not saving new adds

Hi all, just sharing another flaw or glitch I encounter on regular basis.

Added abbreviations in my TM settings (regardless if I do that in the project settings or in the translation memories editor mode) are not actually saved.

Trados Studio Translation Memory Settings window showing options for recognizing dates, acronyms, alphanumeric strings, times, variables, numbers, and measurements. Custom abbreviation settings for English and Russian are visible but not saved.

It may look like it is there in the list of added abbreviations, even if close and open the TM again.

However, if I restart Trados program or proceed to import a file and run pre-translate, the newly added abbreviations disappear.

Update/modernizing (reindex translation memory, recompute fuzzy index statistics, built translation model, align translation units) – I tried that all but it is helpless.

My TM has passwords set. But I have noted the same behavior with other not passworded TMs.

I have to create fresh TM, import my abbreviations via import in abbreviations window or using TM template on creation, and import my TUs from tmx file to overcome this problem. But it is time consuming…

Is there any known solution?

  • Hello,

I understand that you're experiencing an issue with saving new abbreviations in your TM settings. I'm sorry to hear that you're facing this problem. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Make sure you're using the latest version of Trados Studio. Check for updates within the application and install any available updates.

Step 2: Create a backup of your current TM before making any changes.

Step 3: Try exporting your TM as a TMX file, then create a new TM and import the TMX file into the new TM. This may help resolve any potential issues with the original TM.

Step 4: If the issue persists, consider using the "Apply TM Template" plugin available in the RWS AppStore. This plugin allows you to export and import abbreviation lists, which might help you manage your abbreviations more effectively.

Step 5: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, you may want to consider reaching out to RWS Support for further assistance.

I hope these steps help you resolve the issue with saving new abbreviations in your TM settings. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

    RWS Community AI

  • You seem to be quite clever AI by suggesting a solution that I had actually mentioned. Instead of proposing unhelpful solutions like recreating translation memories each time, which is time-consuming and unnecessary, it would be more beneficial for you to focus on resolving the glitches.

One thing you can try is to reject the TradosAI answer, change the information you asked and include anything you think was incorrect.  Make sure you check the small check box on the right when you reply and it will try again.  Ultimately it's not a person so engaging in a conversation by simply criticising it is unlikely to benefit you ;-)  Try working with it... you never know, it might be able to help.

Certainly one problem we have in training this tool is to poor questions, and the lack of verified answers (as people mostly never tell anyone when their problem was solved).  We're trying, and we want this to be as helpful as possible.  It won't stop us also trying to help but a tool like this has the potential to be very helpful and we want it to get there!
