How to open an .xlf file in Studio 2014

I am admittedly at a beginner level as a PM. I have Studio 2014, and a translator sent me a file in .xlf format, when we request all bilingual files be in .sdlxliff format. I know I should be able to open it in Trados, but when I try to, the file is not even recognized as a file that could be opened in Trados. Can someone please give me instructions aimed at a beginner?

thanks!

  • First of all I can't open XLF file although I can see it listed in Options > File types under XCLIFF and WsXliff. And there it ends. Officially support for XLF format is there but I just don't see how can I work with it.

When I get it converted to SDLXLIFF by the agency I can't export it to XLF nor "save it as". The agency seems to have problem with conversion too but somehow they succeed by using Studio 2009 and 2011. Their client requires XLF, he is not interested in SDLXLIFF. And I have only Studio 2014 that ignores XLF.

Would be nice if Studio could just open XLF as all the other formats that I use in my work. I wish to avoid complicated workarounds as we live in 21th century and Trados is supposed to be among the leading companies in CAT tools.
