Mistakes in previewed layout - PDF preview in Microsoft Word?

Hello!

A translated PDF, when previewed in Microsoft Word, has mistakes in the layout. (Two separate titles are run-on; indentation on one line of numbered list is wrong.) There appears to be no reason for these preview errors when looking at the PDF in Trados Studio. Could it be caused by the conversion of a PDF to a Microsoft Word layout?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello Kathleen,

The issue you're experiencing could indeed be due to the conversion of a PDF to a Microsoft Word layout. Trados Studio uses an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process to convert PDF files into an editable format. This process is not always perfect, especially with complex layouts, and can sometimes result in errors in the layout when previewed in Microsoft Word.

Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Check the original PDF file. If the original PDF file has any formatting issues, these will likely be carried over into the Word document.

Step 2: Try converting the PDF to Word using a different tool. There are many online tools available that can convert PDF files to Word documents. You might find that one of these tools does a better job at preserving the layout of your document.

Step 3: Manually correct the layout issues in Word. If the layout issues are minor, it might be quicker to simply correct them manually in Word.

Step 4: If the problem persists, consider using a different format. If the layout of the PDF is too complex to be accurately converted to Word, you might have better results by converting it to a different format, such as TXT or RTF.

Remember, Trados Studio is primarily a translation tool, and while it does offer some document conversion functionality, it might not always be the best tool for the job when it comes to complex document layouts.

    I hope this helps!
