First, what languages exactly do you add to Studio when you install! You can check by seeing what languages you have available to you.  Just mention the main language as you get all the flavours when you add them.

Next, you mention sdlxliff. We’re you given this sdlxliff and you created a project from it or was it part of a package?

Then, what languages are in the sdlxliff? Check in a text editor if you’re not sure. They’ll be in the first few lines of the sdlxliff.

thank you so much for handling my request - and on a Sunday even, that's awsome.

From your reply, I feel that perhaps something went wrong when I installed Tradios Studio on my new computer, let's see if this might be a reason for the problem.

- Do you mean that, as some stage, I should have actually specified the languages I wanted to work in? This sounds a bit odd when you consider that I work English to French - I expected those languages to be imbedded or automatically installed as you run the installation in the firtst place.

Anyway, should I reinstall Trados?

- As to the file, yes, I was sent a simple SDL Xliff file,  - not a package - US English to French;  I did create a new project and I imported my file. Everything went well. But the file cannot be opened. 

My task is an editing job and was urgent so as an alternative, I used MemoQ and was able to process the file with tracked changes.

But my team mate, who is responsible for checking the edits, said he could actually not open the file on Trados. 

Et voilà.

You have an old version of Trados Studio.  If it's a Freelance licence, and I suspect it is, then you are asked which languages you want when you install.  You get five with a Freelance licence.  So choose English United Kingdom and you get all the variants as well... so around 100 variants with one choice.  You want French choose one French... and then choose three more.

The potential problems you can get from this are receiving a package that may contain more languages than you realise for example.  These problems can be avoided if the creator of the package takes care to create one package for each translator... but many just create one for all!

In the current version of Studio the licencing restrictions work a different way and now you get all languages and variants by default.

Can you share the file with me perhaps?  You can send it to pfilkin at sdl dot com.

You did the work in memoQ.  What did you actually send back to your mate?  You also said you used track changes in memoQ... this may well have corrupted the file for Studio.
