Problems with overwriting segments in Trados Studio 2019

I am having trouble overwriting segments in Trados Studio 2019. When I save and close a segment, and then go back and make a change, both versions are appearing in the TM rather than the first version being overwritten.
I suspect this may have something to do with using the "AnyTM" function. I have added my own file-based TM to the job, but as this is set up for German(Germany)-English(UK) and the job is German(Switzerland)-English(US) I have had to use "AnyTM" in order to add it.
Any ideas please? I have checked that the "Update" box is ticked in Project Settings.

  • Hello,

It seems like you're on the right track with your troubleshooting. The "AnyTM" function allows you to use a translation memory (TM) with different language pairs, but it can sometimes lead to issues like the one you're experiencing.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help you resolve this:

Step 1: Ensure that your TM settings are correct. Go to the Translation Memories view, select your TM, and check the settings. Make sure that the "Concordance Search" option is set to "AnyTM" and that the "Update" box is ticked.

Step 2: Check your project settings. Go to the Project Settings view and ensure that the "Update" box is ticked for your TM under the "All Language Pairs" or specific language pair settings.

Step 3: If the problem persists, you might want to consider creating a new TM specifically for the German(Switzerland)-English(US) language pair. This could help avoid any potential conflicts or issues caused by using the "AnyTM" function.

Step 4: As you've mentioned, running an "Update Main TM" batch task with "Keep most recent translation units" or "Overwrite existing translation units" can be a quick fix. This should remove any duplicates and keep only the most recent translation unit in your TM.

Remember, Trados Studio is designed to keep all versions of a segment in the TM by default, as this can be useful for reference or for tracking changes. If you prefer to only have the most recent version, you'll need to manually run the "Update Main TM" batch task as you've been doing.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
