MS Office 365/2013

Hello All

Following on from the discussions on whether or not to upgrade to Windows 10, I was wondering if there are any views on the various versions of MS Office?

I currently use 2010, just wondering if anyone uses 365 or 2013, and what, if any, any improvements it offers for use with Studio or translation in general. I'm in the process of setting up a new desktop PC and generally reviewing things, since it came with Windows 8.1, I probably will take the leap into Windows 10.

Successive versions of Word don't seem to add much in terms of usability, particularly when one gets documents to be translated from major corporate outfits which are resolutely in "typewriter" mode. I still have fond memories of WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS - there is not much you can do in the current MS Word (apart from interaction with CAT tools of course) that you couldn't in WP 5.1. (I still have the manual and tutorials, certainly no progress in that department!)

Any thoughts?

  • AFAIR O365 will not support preview.
    Office 2013 works very well, but beside the fact I use Outlook 2013 because of the Exchange server my e-mail account runs on, I do not see much changes between O2010 and O2013. If you are lucky with O2010, I do not really see many reasons to switch to O2013.
    As for WordPerfect ... Well, you must live in the US I assume. WP was never that popular in Europe. My experience with WP (I don't remember the version, it must have been something like 4 or even 5) was not better than with Word 6.0. And from what I remember there are changes in the functionality. Maybe not huge indeed :)

    Thanks Jerzy, that more or less confirms my thoughts - I will probably stick with Office 2010 for the time being.
    Actually I am in England - maybe rose-tinted spectacles for WP 5.1, it was my first word processing experience on my first PC, in the early-mid nineties. Support was on the end of a normal landline, based here in England and very helpful (I seem to remember a great deal of help writing macros). Having started off with a PC running DOS, it was like pre electronic era cars, much easier to understand what was going on and do your own thing.

    Now I understand. My first PC came 1990 with DOS 3.2 (I think) and Word 4. After very short time I have got Word 5 for DOS and 1993 or 1994 (but I think it was more probably 1993) I switched to Windows and Word 6. This was a very comfortable solution and Word 6 was really a good tool. One year later I have had to work with WordPerfect and found it more complicated and less user friendly than Word.
    But... It has shown the text structure in a small window below the main editing window. There you could see something like tags - and you know what? Exactly for this reason I understood later, why the text written in Trados 2007 (or now in Studio) is bold or not bold (or whatever it should be), depending on how do you place your cursor and from which side you move it. From left to right or from right to left changes the formatting :)
    Yes, cars without electronic and with manual gear shift (the first gear and the backward gear being even not synchronised) was also my experience, back in 1979...
    But I really doubt DOS was easier to understand. What it caused for sure: you have got a feeling, why the file has to be stored where. It was the "kindergarden" of a good understanding of how a PC works. Gave you a feeling for organizing you data and so on. Compared with today, it was a very good school. Nowadays people many of us translators search for their own files, even sometimes asking in an open forum "where are my files", because they don't know where they stored them. The answer ist quite often "I do not know where the COMPUTER did store MY files". So not I am guilty, but the dumb PC...

    Hi Jerzy, hi Michael,
    Windows and Word 6, I remember! After DOS it was simply amazing.
    I also remember buying the first issue of French proofing tools for Word, they came on a separate disc and allowed you to change the virtual keyboard layout and type directly in French without needing to use codes for the accents! I knew it was the next logical step, it had to come, and it did. SO wonderful!
    And yes, everything was done from the base structure upwards, using 'building bricks' that made sense - or at least, being married then to a programmer, I was aware of the 'mechanics' of the computer. So I've never forgotten what is going on 'underneath'. Very useful as each new layer of 'bricks' is laid with each new version of whatever software we're using.
    Many folk are undermined in their work because they don't understand anything about the structure beneath what they see on the screen.
    Plus, they don't understand that the computer is a tool and that you can make it do what YOU want, not the other way around.
    Ah yes, reminiscing...

    Well, lucky you... They did not invent Polish fonts until the late 90 at MS. Our first job into Polish was written without the diacritics and we used a black "flamaster" to add them in the printout... The printout came from a 24 needle printer...

    Dear Jerzy,
    Yes, I remember adding the accents as neatly as possible on the printout with a Rotring pen...

    I remember before that struggling with a dot matrix printer and its horrid ribbon cartridge...

    Those were the days! We don't always remember how 'lucky' we are, eh? ;-)
