Autopropagation problems 2

Trados Studio Freelance 21

For years I have striven to define my thousand separator in English translations as a hard space. With each new version it seems to return to the default for English, which is a comma.

I am now translating a new document similar to the one in a question posted a short while ago, and suddenly in a new variation on the theme, my thousand separator has changed to nothing at all.

Norwegian figure input: 450 420 914

English translation output: 45042914.

After the usual undesired, unstoppable autopropagation, my whole document now has these compressed figures.

Advice, please! I assume I won't be able to reverse the process, and will have to rename the source document and start again - but how do I set the thousand separator the way I want it and keep it that way?

Autopropagation of number only segments was and is (and most certainly will remain) a problem. For number only segments there are much better methods as autopropagatiopn.

The easiest way to deal with such segments is to use the display filter, copy all source to target and adapt the notation via search and replace. In your case it would be replacing space or non-breaking space by a dot. Very simple, very fast and much more reliable as autopropagation.

  • Hi, Jerzy, not sure how this would work with a mixed text and numbers document (annual report and accounts). What I WANT is a hard space, not a dot - or a comma.

I was talking about only number segments. Numbers in text are a different story. You need to adapt the replacement settings in your project:

Trados Studio project settings showing options for number and currency auto-substitution with examples and status indicators.

    And in your TM:

Translation Memory settings in Trados Studio with options for recognizing various elements like dates, times, and numbers for German and Spanish languages.

Number Formats dialog in Trados Studio allowing customization of thousand and decimal separators with examples provided.

And of course you can modify numbers in text using regular expressions. Not very simple, but doable.

  • Thanks - I know the theory - I have more trouble with the practice, especially as I don't want either a comma or a fullstop. I want the international space, preferably hard space.

But I will try again, and thanks for showing me where to find the settings I need to change!

So remove what is setup there and insert your own preferences. If you cannot type a hard space there, either copy and paste this or use ALT+0160 to enter a non-breaking space (synonym to hard space).
