SDL Trados 2007 user needs advice on upgrading

I use SDL Trados 2007 (and SDL Multi Term 2011 Desktop) in my work as a patent translator. What I love about Trados 2007 is that this program allows me to work within a Word file. (I work exclusively with Word files). I have tried SDL Trados 2011, but I dislike the way this program does not display my Word file and instead extracts each sentence and loads it into a row in a table. The screen looks nothing like the document I need to translate. I cannot work this way. I need to be able to work like a writer who types words directly onto a page, in this case directly underneath the sentence in the source language. I also need to be able to scroll up and down within the entire document while translating it in order to see the "big picture." Do any currently supported versions of Trados (for freelancers) have a mode that displays the Word file on the screen and allows the user to work directly within the Word file? Thank you very much for your advice.

Note to Management: I would gladly pay an annual subscription fee to obtain another license for my SDL Trados 2007 software so that I can use my program on a newer (Windows 7) computer system.

  • John, I want to thank you for suggesting Wordfast Classic. Since then I have purchased Wordfast Classic, found an excellent support group in a Wordfast Facebook page, learned how to transfer my SDL Trados TMs and terminology data bases into Wordfast Classic, and have become familiar with most of the basics of using this system. Today is the first day I have used Wordfast Classic 100% in my translation work. I have successfully transitioned away from Trados 2007 to a "modern" CAT tool, which is something I have been needing to do for years. You set me on the right path. I am very thankful for your help!
