For some reason, I don't have access to these formatting options (and probably to others, as well) in my current document.
I've tried both the keyboard shortcuts and the menu buttons in "Home".
This may have something to do with how the client formatted the xliff, because I do having access to these functions in other documents.
However, I still need to add bold and italics in my current documents.
Any ideas?
What’s the original format of the document?
Some extensions, such as DOCX and XLSX, will let you add bold and italics. Many others extensions won’t let you, such as TXT (it’s just plain text) and any kind of XML (is the tag bold, BOLD, boldface or emphasis or something else? Trados doesn’t know).

I can't tell from the xliff, but it was OCRd from a non-editable .pdf.
If the client sent you an XLIFF, you can’t add formatting, beacuse it’s a XML file.
And let your client know.
