Tables of contents

I have a regular client that sends me Word documents with a table of contents with in-document links. I'm increasingly having trouble with formatting (of the table itself) when I finish the translation and generate the target translation. I don't know if something is wrong in my settings or process... Can anyone point me to a resource on handling linked tables of contents within Trados Studio (2021)? The basic problem is that when my target ToC updates (so that my translated text is there), it throws the formatting WAY off, and my client wants the table to look exactly the same as in the original. It would be nice to find a webpage or webinar on "everything you need to know about tables of contents in Studio."

    I think your problem is related to how to create a table of contents in Word, not Studio.  Studio doesn't manage the formatting of a table of contents, Word does.

    But my source document already has a table of contents. Can I not use that document in Studio and expect the target translation Studio generates to be in the same format? It's generally in the same format in other respects, so why the problem with tables of contents?

    What would happen if you regenerated the table of contents in the existing source?  It may be that you are lacking something when you do this that your client does not and you regenerating it causes the ToC to adopt some other format.

    Maybe you're telling us something that causes us to imagine something different to what you actually have?

    Studio does not create a table of contents.  Studio doesn't extract it at all for translation.  Only Word creates the ToC.

    I understand your concern about maintaining the formatting of tables of contents in Word documents when translating with Trados Studio 2021. Here are some steps you can follow to ensure the formatting remains consistent:

    Step 1: Before you start translating, make sure to save the original Word document's styles. You can do this by opening the document, going to the "Styles" pane, and then saving the styles.

    Step 2: When you're ready to translate, import the Word document into Trados Studio. Make sure to select the option to "Preserve source formatting" during the import process.

    Step 3: After you've finished translating, generate the target translation. The formatting should remain the same as the original document.

    Step 4: If the formatting is still off, you can apply the original styles that you saved earlier. Open the translated document in Word, go to the "Styles" pane, and then apply the saved styles.
