merging non-successive segments / Fix Hyphen docx filetype / keep original LTR layout

Hi RWS support team and all Studio Community

here are my Q and Requests:

1- add a feature to fix hyphen for the docx file type,

this will remove hyphen and then increase TM matches and NMT translation

Trados Studio options menu with 'Fix Hyphen' feature highlighted, showing an error message in the preview pane for a docx file with hyphenation issues.

2- merging non-successive segments

how to?

Trados Studio translation segment showing hyphenated words in a docx file, indicating a need for a feature to remove hyphens for better translation matching.

3- Keep the original LTR layout in the Arabic-translated docx

add this feature as (enable/disable) RTL function when saving the translated docx

as Studio adds by default RTL for BiDi Arabic

I need Studio to preserve the original LTR layout even in BiDi Arabic.

  • Hello,

Thank you for your questions and suggestions. Here are the answers and steps to your queries:

    1. Fixing hyphen for the docx file type:

Currently, Trados Studio does not have a built-in feature to automatically remove hyphens from a docx file. However, you can manually remove hyphens in the source document before importing it into Trados Studio. This can help increase TM matches and NMT translation.

    2. Merging non-successive segments:

Trados Studio does not support merging non-successive segments. The segments must be adjacent to each other to be merged.

    3. Keeping the original LTR layout in the Arabic-translated docx:

Trados Studio automatically applies RTL for BiDi Arabic. However, you can manually change the direction in the translated document in Microsoft Word after exporting it from Trados Studio. Here's how:

Step 1: Open the translated document in Microsoft Word.

Step 2: Add LTR run and RTL run buttons to the quick access toolbar in Word.

Step 3: Select the Arabic text.

      Step 4: Click LTR run.

This should preserve the original LTR layout in your Arabic-translated docx.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

I believe issues #1 and #2 are no related to a CAT tool, but they can be corrected in Word before opening the document in Trados Studio.

You have also the possibility to implement minor edits in Source with the shorcut ALT+F2. I’d follow this way if there are just a few edits. If there are a lot, as it seems in this case, I’d use in Word instead (BTW, the document seems to be the exported version of a PDF).

About request #3, I understand what you mean, but maybe not related to a translation tool, but to Word or InDesign.
