Studio 2014 going all caps on me without reason

Hi, I hope someone can help: I'm currently translating in Studio 2014 and for whatever reason, Trados turns letters into all caps ever now and then (without me hitting the corresponding key on the keyboard of course), it's also very slow processing the sentences I enter. It's really annyoing. Does anyone know whether I am inadvertently hitting a key combination that triggers that or just how I can make Trados not do this?

And - I know this is bad etiquette, but it's only a quick, kind of related questions - another question: sometimes, when I have sentences in italics in the original, I get a different font (and no italics) on the right hand side. How come?

Thanks so much in advance!

  • Hi
First problem: it occurs usually on bigger documents, when your PC is overloaded, running numerous tasks beside Studio. A restart of Studio and/or the whole PC usually helps. This is kind of reaction on ignored autosuggest or similar.

Second problem: this is caused by (in your case invisible) tags. What Studio does, if you start typing in an empty segment, is applying the style, which is applied in the source document. However, and this happens mainly in Word documents, user do not use styles to modify formatting, but rather do that locally. So in this very case there will be tags, if you go to File -> Options -> Editor and change the option there to "Show tags and formatting" or "Show all tags, but do not show formatting". IMHO the latter option is the best for working with Studio, as then you just have text to translate and some tags to place. You do not need to bother with this or that formatting - it is all tags.

  • Jerzy, hey, thank you for your reply. Yes, it's a 100k novel, so that is a bit big.... I usually break them into chapters but was too lazy since it has so many. Too late to break it up now, I guess.
I'll try to restart and I also follow your instructions on the font changes. Sometimes, Trados is too clever for its own good. :-) Or for mine...
