Exporting translation as tracked changes to MS Word

Hi,

I found many discussions around importing and keeping already existing tracked changes inside a word document throughout the translation process in Trados Studio.

However, my use case is a little different, and does not seem to have been answered before.

I want to achieve the following:

  • Import untranslated document (standard word document; some fields, text, headings; no tracked changes).
  • Translate document in Trados Studio.
  • Export document to MS Word with Tracked Changes.
    • i.e., in the document I want to see my translations as reviewable tracked changes
    • e.g. .... some German text the English translation

Is there a setting in Trados that I am overseeing to achieve this?

Many thanks in adcance and best regards
Alex

I guess the easiest way to do this... I have not tested but I think it'll do what you need... is this:

    1. create your project
    2. copy source to target
    3. switch on tracked changes (or open in review mode)
    4. translate the file
    5. save the target

This way the German text will be target before you translate with tracked changes.  So all the changes should be saved in the target file.

  • Many thanks Paul, this works for now.

However, is there a way to have this work with automated translation providers?

I.e., the current workflow in our translation department ist:

    1. create project
    2. run automated translation on source
    3. verify each translation manually

So for the tracked changes, it appears the flow is:

    1. create project
    2. open untranslated document
      1. run automatic translation
      2. manually verify translation
      3. safe translated file as copy to project
    3. reopen untranslated document
      1. copy source to target
      2. switch on tracked changes
      3. manually copy all translations from 2c into the current document
      4. save target

I guess you could do this:

    1. create your project
    2. copy source to target
    3. switch on tracked changes (or open in review mode)
    4. translate the file using MT and use the option under the Pre-translate Files batch task set to "Always overwrite existing translation"
    5. save the target

  • Hi Paul

Is there any trick we can use to prevent the Track Changes function from being disabled when we start the Pre-translation batch task? After running the batch task, the TC function is no longer activated and thus there are no tracked changes...

    Thank you!
    Best regards
