If it's multilingual use the Multilingual XML filetype, and if it's monolingual just create a custom XML filetype.

Or are you really interested in some sort of solution to take the XML file you have and do something else with it before bringing it into a translation environment?

As far as I can see, this is a multilingual export. I had hoped to get multilingual exports, but no such luck...
Basically, I need to find a way to get rid of all these CDATA blocks, hoping that they don't contain translatable content.

So is it or isn't it ;-)

If it is then handling this with the Multilingual XML filetype is probably simple enough.  Have you tried it?  Can you perhaps create a sample XML that contains the header and footer to the XML and then strip down the CDATA part to something small and with content you can share?

The mind boggles... Sorry, I meant to say that this is monolingual...
But news just in: the web designer downloaded the WPML plugin and will deliver XLIFF files; hopefully we'll be able to use the Multilingual XML file type.

Excellent... no doubt still full of CDATA, but you should be able to use the Multilingual XML filetype for that.
