2015 - How to create Quick Insert tags to highlight text

Hi, there was previously (before 2015) a Quick Insert available letting you insert tags to highlight text in the target (tags that do not exist in the source), but that is no longer in the list of formatting tags provided. I have never had any luck creating my own Quick Insert tags: I have followed instructions and indeed have created tag pairs, but they have never functioned. I would really appreciate advice on how to do this. I would like to be able to create different colour highlights, e.g. yellow, blue, pink etc.

Thanks all!

  • This can very much depend on the source format. Many formats will not support highlighting.

  • Hi Sian,

They are still there, but still as inaccessible as they were before. At some point they will be made available as things you can customie so you can add them to your quick access toolbar for example.  But for now you have to get at them like this:

But as Jerzy said, they are not available for all formats and this is because if the parent application can't highlight then we don't either.  This unfortunately doesn't recognise that many users would like to highlight their text as they work, or even have the highlights come out in the export for external review.  So if this latter point is your requirement then use commenting... it can be very quick and applies a highlight to text that can be seen when you export for external review.

  • Ahhhhhhhh - thank you Paul. The fact that I was working with the old-format ppt file explains why the highlight options were not shown in the quick insert selection list. I'm glad it is still there for docs! I was trying to avoid using comments, just because, but sure, that is a workaround for this circumstance, I can use empty ones.

    Thanks for the clarification :)

PS - so setting up my own tag pairs so I can have pink, green, blue, yellow etc. highlights isn't an option, then? Because colour-coding can indeed be a useful tool in various circumstances, but I've never managed to create a tag pair that worked. Thanks!

    Hi Sian,

I'm afraid not.  First because the filetype may not support it, and secondly because Studio doesn't support this as a full feature.  If the file was a DOC/DOCX then I guess a workaround would be to add a few words with different coloured hightlighting to the start of the source, and then when you open the file the appropriate tag controls would in the file.  Now you could actually place these tags to force the colour highlighting you want.  But it's not a clever workaround because you'd have to keep going back to the start of the file to pick up the tags!

On your tag pairs never working... hmnn... I guess you are trying to create tag pairs for things that are not supported.

    Regards

  • Thanks, Paul. Certainly, the file type not supporting the feature is a non-starter :). I have previously tried it on doc types, and not managed to make it work. I don't have the machine with that installation handy right now, so I can't discuss what I did (wrong?!), but I like your work around! (you are such a cheat, it's great). Sure, having to go back to start of file for the tags all the time would be a bind...

Some sort of feature allowing tag pairs to be saved as Quick Insert tags would be nice, no? Preferably remaining available for all files of that file type, although even if were only within that actual project, it could be good. And/or maybe enabling a temporary keystroke mapping (that would only be within that doc. or project, though, I imagine).

This already works Sian. If you create them in File -> Options, or in the project templates themselves, then they will always be available for any new project.  If that doesn't work for you then perhaps we should do a quick skype session or something to see why?

  • Hi, sorry Paul. I guess this is the Custom 1 etc. options Quick Inserts keyboard shortcuts? Yes, I havn't sussed how to use them and I had forgotten they existed. Wouldn't this be the ideal use in the workaround situation you suggested, adding highlight tags to the source file; being able to save them as Custom Tags would avoid the need to go back to the start of the source file all the time? If that is not possible, my suggestion stands?

Greatly appreciate the offer of a skype session, will certainly come back to you on that :) (but probably best to wait until my current massive coughing fits have stopped! makes talking almost impossible)

I'm afraid not because the custom insert feature is not used for tags like these.  If you have special quotes for example, then you can add them.  So text based information.  But not anything that would actually alter the appearance of the text in the translation.

  • Rats eh. So my suggestion stands :D (I just obviously expressed myself badly) or all will be explained when I'm able to talk again and we can skype. Thanks!
