What is the purpose of the sdlxliff files in the source folder?

Here is an example:

The source language is English and the target is French.

Are the sdlxliff files in en-US for backup purposes? Looking at the contents, it seems the sdlxliff files in en-US and fr-FR are not identical.

However, if you run "Copy to Target Languages" it does some other processing.

Yes back up would be a benefit and I guess this just happens 'naturally' as part of the batch task "Convert to translatable format" where the source file gets converted once and then copied over multiple times depending on number of target languages. This also creates an efficiency – rather than reconverting every time for each target language you only need to convert once and then simply copy the file over. I guess another benefit would also be if you decide to add one or more target languages later then you already have the converted source files and can just run the Copy task to copy the files to the new target lang folders.

So it's really all about efficiency.
