Bilingual Excel: length limitation setting

Dear Community!

After reading this article https://gateway.sdl.com/apex/communityknowledge?articleName=000013914, I performed a test, however, Trados showed me no error when I exceeded the segment length limit set in one of the columns.

Image 1: test text

Screenshot of a spreadsheet with three columns labeled 'Ingles', 'Arabe', and 'Ruso', with a 'Length limit' column on the right. Highlighted cells indicate segment length settings.

Image 2: Project settings

Screenshot of Trados Studio project settings with 'Columnas' section showing 'Columna de origen' as A, 'Columna de traduccion' as C, and 'Columna con limitacion de longitud' as D.

Output:

Screenshot of a Trados Studio document with segments in English and Russian. One segment is highlighted in red, indicating a potential length limit issue.

No notification about the extra length of the translated segment.

Is there any other option that must be activated?

QA checker only allows to establish one unique length for the target segment, unlike Bilingual Excel, which supposedly allows to set a specifc character length for each segment.

Many thanks in advance!

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide the version of Trados Studio you are using and any recent changes or updates you have made to the software. Also, it would be helpful to know if you have tried any troubleshooting steps already.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

From your description, it seems like you have set the character limit correctly in the Bilingual Excel settings. However, if Trados Studio is not flagging segments that exceed this limit, there might be a few things you can check:

Step 1: Ensure that the QA Checker is enabled. You can do this by going to Project Settings -> Verification -> QA Checker 3.0. Make sure the box for 'Check segment length' is ticked.

Step 2: Check if the 'Maximum segment length' in the QA Checker settings matches the limit you set in the Bilingual Excel settings. If they are different, the QA Checker might not flag segments that exceed the limit set in the Bilingual Excel settings.

Step 3: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, try resetting your Trados Studio settings to default. You can do this by going to File -> Setup -> Reset to Default Settings. Please note that this will reset all your custom settings, so make sure to back them up first.

Step 4: If the issue persists, it might be a bug in the software. In this case, I would recommend checking for updates within the application or visiting the RWS AppStore for any available patches or updates.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

  • Great!

    I activated this function:

Trados Studio project settings showing an error in 'Verification of length' with a red error icon and a dropdown set to 'Error'.

    And voilá:

Trados Studio translation segment with an error message stating paragraph unit exceeds the maximum length permitted (10), actual length is 56.

    Thank you, AI :)!
