How to Add Field Values for Different Files in One Project & Why Trados Always Uses History Field Values from History Single Document Translation Creation?

Hi, all,

Sorry for such a long title~

When create a project, it usually doesn't contain one document but multiple documents. So logically, it will not be possible to add values for the fields, such as SourceFile and TargetFile, since the content are different from one document to another. So how can I add the values for these fields? Is there a batch task method or do I have to add for one segment after another manually? And how?

Here is the second question. I prefer using "single document translation" method when there is only one document for translation and I will add values for the corresponding fields. However, when I shift to creating project, although I leave the field values blank, when shown in the "translation results window", there still can be seen  the old values from the single document translation creation. For example, if for the previous document, I add the value for SourceFile as "AAAA", and for translator field, as "BBB",if I use the project creation method and have left the SourceFile vield blank and fill in the translator field with "BBB", I can see in the translation results window that the SourceFile field value for the document I am translating is "AAAA". I suppose it should only display the translator field value as "BBB". So my request is how I can make the field values of the documents in the project I have created as what I have set?

Here are my questions and requests. I hope somebody can help me with them. Thank you in advance!

  • Hi Maggie,

You might find this free app on the OpenExchange helpful here:

This allows you to select your TM through the app instead of using the Add File-based TM options and then you can have field values automatically added to your TUs as you work based on the filename and/or the project name.

I'm not sure I completely understand your second question, but if you have already stored TUs in your TM with values from your previous project then it doesn't matter what project you work in next; if you get a successful lookup the TM results window will show the lookup result with the previously stamped value because it was saved this way.

If you make sure the field value can accept multiple values then you can add your new values to the existing, but no matter what you do the TM can only show you existing values.

I'm sorry, because I don't think I understood what you really meant, but perhaps you can put me straight?

    Regards

    Paul

  • HI,Paul,

    Sorry for the confusion.

To describe my last bewildering problem is a little difficult, because the process of how I got there was not even clear to me! But I think I have found out the reason why my problem occurred. When setting for the previous project, I set up for EN-CN language pair and filled in the field values for this project file. And when I was setting up for my next project, I neglected the fact that the field values for SourceFile and others for the previous project were only set up in the single language pair, which was EN-CN language pair and I set up this time, in All language pairs. That's why the Translation Results Window showed the field values of my last project file! In a nutshell, I should have set up the field values in EN-CN language pair when I was creating my new project. I modified the settings in EN-CN language pair and put in the corresponding field values and this worked.

The similar problem has occurred in the past. Since I don't know exactly the difference between All Language Pairs and single language pair and because I don't use another language pair except for EN-CN, I always use them by mistake and take it for granted that the configurations in All Lanuguage pairs are exactly the same with that in the single language pair. After this time, I think I have learned the lesson.

Thank you for your timely response and being so patient!

    Best,
    Maggie
