Persistent "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" Error with Trados SDL 2015

Trados SDL 2015. Regardless of the project or client, I consistently encounter the error: "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation." I have tried numerous suggested fixes, including all tips from previous posts and online resources, without success.

Here are the specifics of my situation:

  • System: I'm running Trados on Windows 11.
  • Issue: The error occurs with every project I attempt to load or execute.
  • Attempted Solutions: I've tried running the program in compatibility mode, as administrator, and even disabling antivirus software, but the issue persists.

Compounding the software problem, I am also struggling with accessing my previous TranslationZone account since RWS took over. I worked with RWS for 15 years until last year when their new login protocols (involving phone call security and complex systems for every interaction) made access nearly impossible. Billing has also been problematic. As a result, I'm unable to retrieve my license number or receive support directly from RWS.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance on:

  • How to address this persistent error without needing to uninstall and reinstall Trados, if possible.
  • How to navigate RWS's current systems to retrieve my license number or gain meaningful support.

I am considering whether I need to upgrade to a newer version of Trados or explore alternative translation tools due to these ongoing issues.

Thank you in advance for any help or insight you can provide!

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide the exact version of Trados Studio 2015 you are using and any error codes that accompany the error message. Also, it would be helpful to know if there were any recent changes or updates to your system or Trados software before the issue started.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with Trados Studio 2015 and accessing your TranslationZone account. Let's try to address these one at a time.

For the "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" error, you can try the following steps:

Step 1: Close all Trados Studio applications.

Step 2: Stop the 'SDL License Server' or 'RWS License Server' via the services.msc console.

Step 3: Rename the 'Licenses' folder in C:\ProgramData\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\16\ to 'Licenses_old'.

Step 4: Restart the license server service.

Step 5: Try launching Trados Studio again.

If the issue persists, you may need to consider reinstalling Trados Studio 2015, ensuring you back up your settings, projects, and translation memories first.

Regarding your TranslationZone account, I understand the new login protocols can be challenging. Unfortunately, without your license number, it's difficult to provide specific guidance. However, you can try reaching out to RWS through their general contact form or phone line for assistance. They should be able to help you retrieve your license number and navigate their current systems.

Lastly, upgrading to a newer version of Trados might resolve your current issues and provide you with additional features and improvements. However, this decision should be based on your specific needs and circumstances.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

    Let's unpack this a little...

Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation

Worth checking the knowledgebase.  Quite a lot on that that error...

I am also struggling with accessing my previous TranslationZone account since RWS took over.

TranslationZone disappeared a long time ago... before RWS I think.  Everything has been under trados.com for a while I think.

I worked with RWS for 15 years until last year when their new login protocols (involving phone call security and complex systems for every interaction) made access nearly impossible.

News to me... perhaps you are using something else that is not quite what you have explained here?

As a result, I'm unable to retrieve my license number or receive support directly from RWS.

Your licence number is in your account.  Just go to https://www.trados.com/ and in the top right you'll find the login link.  Click it and either choose "RWS Account" and navigate to "Products & Plans -> Licences & Subscriptions" or just click on "Licences":

Screenshot of the Trados website navigation menu with red arrows pointing to 'RWS Account' and 'Licenses' options.

I checked and all your licences are there.

I also checked your support agreement and you don't have one, so you have already found the right place to come and ask for help.  Let us know if you still need help after you login to your account.  If you don't remember your password then use the forgotten password help.
