Compatibility Issue Between Windows 11 (24H2) and Trados 2022 Glossaries (only happens in certain computers, like DELL, but not in ASUS).

Dear RWS Team,

I am a freelance translator who has been working with Trados since its earliest versions. Although I am not a direct license holder, I use Trados under the agency license of the translation company where I serve as an interim translator.

Recently, we have observed a critical issue affecting Trados 2022's terminological databases after updating our systems to version 24H2 of Windows 11. This problem seems to occur on devices from certain manufacturers, and here is what we have found so far:

  1. All of our DELL computers are affected by this issue. Terminological databases fail to function entirely.

  2. ASUS computers, on the other hand, work perfectly fine with Trados 2022's glossaries post-update.

  3. The issue only arises after the 24H2 update to Windows 11. Systems running prior versions of Windows 11 experience no such problems.

We recommend conducting tests on DELL laptops, specifically the Inspiron series 15 or 16, as these models have consistently exhibited the problem.

This issue has already been reported on social media and forums such as PROZ, where several users are sharing similar experiences. Additionally, our agency has been forced to halt multiple projects as a result of this incompatibility. This has led us to consider switching entirely to memoQ in the future.

For the benefit of the broader translation community, it would be valuable for RWS to acknowledge the problem and provide a resolution.

In parallel, we have reached out to Microsoft, who confirmed that the 24H2 update has caused disruptions in the functionality of Microsoft JET databases. According to discussions documented on Microsoft forums, modifications to certain programs' codebases are required to ensure compatibility post-update.

For reference, I am providing links below to video demonstrations where this issue is documented and explained.

I hope RWS can prioritize this matter and offer a prompt solution. The translator community greatly relies on the seamless functionality of tools like Trados to maintain productivity and deliver quality work.

I use a Dell Aurora R16 as desktop and XPS 13 9315, both with Windows 11 24H2. There are NO problems with Trados Studio and term recognition in the version 2024. So an upgrade would be advisable.

  • The video demonstrates that the DELL Inspiron 15 series is affected. Since you do not have a DELL Inspiron, it is clear that your DELL is not experiencing this issue. As mentioned in the title, the problem only affects certain models and manufacturers. The DELL Inspiron 15 series is confirmed to be affected, as shown in the video, and additional DELL models are also impacted.

In the coming weeks, we plan to test the HP All-in-One Series. If they are affected, the findings will be reported in this thread. However, it is important to clarify that the fact you are not experiencing this issue does not necessarily mean the software is free of bugs or that no other users are affected.

I also have a question on you asking RWS to address this:

The video demonstrates that the DELL Inspiron 15 series is affected.

If it's only the Dell Inspiron 15 Series then why do you expect RWS to address the problem with their software and not Dell with their hardware?  There are at least 20 major laptop brands (e.g., Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Apple, etc.), each brand typically offers 10-20 models across consumer, business, and gaming ranges so a conservative estimate would be around 300 distinct laptop models.  So a possible problem with one laptop brand and one Microsoft Windows update, is our problem to address?

For me it looks more like a problem with this product and not with the software. Trados Studio has been tested on a variety of different brands and models. To my knowledge it also has been tested on a virtual Windows machine on a Mac.

  • DELL Inspiron 16 series is also affected. I will start running some tests on several HP computers.

This is not a problem affecting just one specific case. As you mentioned it, it sounds like you are isolating the issue to a single user. No, that is incorrect. This issue affects two entire laptop series, DELL Inspiron 15 and 16 series, both of which have sold thousands of units. This means it is potentially a problem for thousands of users.

In my opinion, yes, it is RWS's responsibility to address this issue.

    • If you are genuinely interested in identifying and resolving this problem, I would be happy to collaborate with you. We can install a demo version of Trados 2024, apply the 24H2 update in Windows 11 Pro, and then begin testing in coordination with the Trados development team. I believe it is more appropriate to focus on Trados 2022 and 2024 (and forget about Trados 2021), as most users are using these versions.
    • If, for some reason, you are not interested in detecting and fixing the issue, just say so, and users will try to find their own solutions, or unfortunately, switch to other software.

I am currently working and haven't had time to read the other message you posted, sorry for that. I will read it tomorrow and get back to you. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

  • I’m sorry, but unless you run a test on multiple DELL Inspiron 15 or 16 series laptops with Windows 11 Pro and the 24H2 update, you are not in a technical position to isolate the problem to a single user. The issue is there, users are reporting it, and it should not be ignored.

Since you are a DELL user, it would be helpful if you could post your DELL Service Tags to get a more precise idea of how old your computers are and their configurations. Thanks in advance.

  • I have replied to this before, but for some reason, my reply was not posted (I am saving a copy of this message because for some reason the forum failed and did not post it). Based on your description of the issue, it seems like an isolated problem affecting a specific user. However, this is not the case. The problem affects all DELL Inspiron 15 and 16 series, which have sold thousands of computers, meaning there are thousands of potential users impacted.

Just 20 minutes ago, I spoke with a colleague on the phone, and she mentioned that she is experiencing the same issue with Trados 2024 on a DELL Inspiron 16. So, this appears to be a compatibility issue between Trados and certain manufacturers and models, such as the DELL Inspiron.

If you're interested in solving this potential issue that could affect thousands of DELL Inspiron users, I would be happy to cooperate. We can install a demo version of Trados 2024 on a DELL Inspiron 15 or 16 and begin testing.

If you agree, please let me know, and we can organize how to proceed with this process.
