Ribbon Customization unstable

I have created a small ribbon which (in theory) 6 items on it:

  1. Save
  2. Save As
  3. Save Target As
  4. Translate Single Document
  5. Commit Changes
  6. Options

However, 3 and 5 are not stable. They disappear and re-appear at random. I don't mean that they get greyed out (I know this happens when a particular command is not available in a certain context) but they disappear completely from the ribbon.

If I go into view options, sometimes the item is still there but the tick has gone (most often happens to Commit Changes), sometimes the entire item has gone (most often happens to Save Target As).

Win8, Trados Studio 2015, all updates installed.

I tested your combination and found out that it works fine.

The confusing thing is that the two commands you mention show up only if you are in the right context, meaning if you are in the Editor (for "Save target as" and in the "Translation Memories" view for "Commit changes"). In other words, instead of being grayed out if they are not applicable, they are not displayed at all.

I agree that this can be confusing. It would be clearer if they were grayed out. On the other hand, I can imagine that this has been done by design in order to make best use of the space available in the ribbon.

Commands are grayed out if they belong to your view, but are not applicable. If they are not available at all in your view, they don't even show up.

Once you know how it works, there is no problem anymore.

  • Hi Walter
Thanks for your answer. This is not easy to replicate as they don't disappear reliably i.e. it's not like every time I add them, whoosh, they-re immediately gone. Sometimes they stay around for a few days, on the last occasion the Save Target As stayed put for about 2 weeks and then suddenly disappeared.

But certainly if I am translating a file, the Save Target As should not disappear at all as it's relevant to that context.

But perhaps there is something buggy in the way these are hidden an re-appear?

The disappearing act is weird, it can't be for space reasons because I was told yesterday by an SDL agent that the custom ribbon is limited to 12 icons anyway and even if they used to large icon size, there wouldn't be a space issue. I think it's bad UI design because it makes the user look for the same icon in different places. The same icon should stay put, even if unavailable.
  • As a result of a fried motherboard, I had to migrate to a new PC, Windows 10. I don't know if it's the OS or phase of the moon but currently the "Save Target As" icon is *totally* unstable. When I go to View > Ribbon Customization it is still there but gets unticked permanently, even when I just move between files without closing down Trados or restarting the system.
I'm guessing that Trados *thinks* this is not a command that should be available in the part of the UI I'm currently in - the Editor.
