Excel files no longer supported in Studio 2021

I am no longer able to open Excel files in Studio 2021. It doesn’t matter what version of Xcel the file is, I always get the error message that this file type is not supported. The Support Department told me to check for updates, which I did, but it still doesn’t work. Any ides?

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide the exact error message you're receiving, the steps you've taken to resolve the issue, and any recent changes to your system or software. Also, mention the operating system you're using.

"In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:"

    Hello,

Based on your query, it seems like you're having trouble opening Excel files in Trados Studio 2021. Trados Studio 2021 does support Excel files, so this issue might be due to a specific setting or a problem with the file itself.

Here are a few steps you can try:

Step 1: Ensure that the Excel file is not open in another program while you're trying to open it in Trados Studio. This can sometimes cause issues.

Step 2: Try to save the Excel file in a different format (e.g., .xlsx instead of .xls) and then try to open it in Trados Studio.

Step 3: If the issue persists, try to create a new project and add the Excel file to this new project.

Step 4: If none of the above steps work, you might want to try reinstalling Trados Studio 2021 to ensure that there are no issues with the installation.

If you have Trados Studio 2019 available, you could also try opening the file there as a temporary workaround.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

I am no longer able to open Excel files in Studio 2021.

The last update for 2021 was 5th of July 2022, so any changes here are not going to be because of a change in the product.  The most likely reasons are probably:

    • the file isn't really an Excel file - so can you open it in Excel?
    • your project template is somehow corrupted,
    • you inadvertently disabled the Excel filetype in the project template

If you can open the file in Excel, take a copy of it and then delete everything from within the file apart from one word.  See if you can open it?  If you can't can you share the Excel with only one word in it by attaching to this forum reply?

Check which project template you use for your projects, and make sure all the Excel filetypes are enabled.

Close Studio, delete this file, restart Studio and try again.

    %UserProfile%\OneDrive\Documents\Studio 2021\Project Templates\Default.sdltpl

    or

    %UserProfile%\Documents\Studio 2021\Project Templates\Default.sdltpl
