Is it possible to disable machine translation when a high match is found?

Hi, I want to disable machine translation when a high match is available, to save on machine translation costs.

I found the following option under Options > Editor, but it doesn't quite do what I need.
Screenshot of Trados Studio Options menu highlighting the 'Apply automated translation when no TM match is found' checkbox under the Automation section.

I would like machine translation to work only when there is no match, or when the match rate is low (for example, lower than 70%).
If my TM has a high match, I use that match instead of using expensive machine translation. So I want to prevent machine translation from working in such cases to reduce costs.
Is this possible? If so, how can I set it up?

Thanks,

  • Hello  ,

Please show me the settings from Project settings as in here:

Trados Studio Project Settings showing Translation Memory providers with 'OpenAI provider for Trados' and 'Test TM ES SP CL.sdltml' listed.

I tested from my side and I have as first suggestion the ones from the TM:

Trados Studio Editor window with Translation Results pane showing a 99% match for a segment in English and Spanish.

These are my settings in Automation:

Trados Studio Options menu under Automation settings with various Translation Memory options checked.

    Hope this can help you.

  • Hi

I believe the setting you are looking for is here:

Screenshot of Trados Studio Project Settings showing Translation Memory and Auto Search options with a focus on 'Look up segments in TM even if a TM match has been found' checkbox.

  • Hi, thank you for both of your replies.

As you mentioned, the Project Settings appear to be useful.
However, the option does not seem to work as expected.

In the Project Settings, I tried both selecting and clearing the checkbox “Look up segments in MT even if a TM match has been found.”
But the results were the same—machine translation worked regardless of the checkbox setting, as shown below.

When a fazzy match is found

Screenshot showing a 99% match in Trados Studio with machine translation results displayed in the NMT column.

    When a 100% match found

Screenshot showing a 100% match in Trados Studio with machine translation results displayed in the NMT column.

Is this the expected behavior, or could it be a bug?
Could you let me know how this option is supposed to work?

    Thanks,

  • Hello Sakura,

we solved this problem on our side by changing the project preparation setting in step 7 Batch-Tasks >>All Language Pairs >> Batch Processing >> Pre-translate Files by changing the standard Translation overwrite mode from Overwrite existing translation if better match found to new: Keep existing translation. Our usual setting is an adapted minimum value of 80 % for the pretranslation (see screenshot below). Before this change we had the NMT matches in target segments after pretranslation although there were high matches in the TM and this problem was solved on our side by the changed setting during project creation. Perhaps this might be an idea for you, too. Have a nice weekend - Best - Renate DockhornTrados Studio interface showing the 'Create a New Project - Batch Tasks' screen with step 7 highlighted. The 'Pre-translate Files' option is selected under 'Batch Processing'.
