Adding Austrian German month names (Jänner and Feber) to the list of recognised lists of month names to allow localisation of dates in SDL Studio 2014

Question

I frequently deal with Austrian German and German German dates in text and am having problems setting up the auto localisation option to also ensure that J&auml;nner and Feber are recognised in SDL Studio 2014. In particular their recognition is important to stop sentence-based segmentation being thrown out. How can J&auml;nner and Feber be added? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Michael, 
 
You can't add to the auto-localization feature in the core product as this is drawn from your Windows operating system. So if Windows recognises these forms then Studio should too. So one thing you could try is to make sure they are in your Regional Language settings in the Windows Control Panel. 
 
If the problem is one of segmentation, which I don't understand based on the examples you have posted, then you could add the forms to the abbreviation list perhaps in the language resource template of your Translation Memory. 
 
Maybe a more elaborate example of the problem would help to generate a more helpful answer?

To add on what Paul said: you indeed have to check, if Windows does support these month names. If it does, then Studio will do too. As for the segmentation: you certainly refer to something like 12. Dez. 2015 or 6. Jan. 2016? If so, these are not common abbreviations and thus are not yet represented in the abbreviation list of your TM(s). To add them go to TM properties and edit the abbreviation list. After that the segmentation will recognize these abbreviations in any new project. Already existing projects will need to be recreated.

Just checked the Windows settings: if you select "German (Austria)" in the regional settings, Windows will indeed adapt the month name, but only for January, wich becomes "Jänner". February however still is named "Februar".

Collectively your responses have helped me to solve the problem. By adding Jänner and Feber to the ordinal followers in the language resources for the German language version of the TM the problem is also solved. 
 
The suggestion from Jerzy and Walter also helped me to customise the date format in English to also use DD.MM.YYYY (rather than DD/MM/YYYY) which was another issue I had been having.
