Hi,
Again, I am having issues after an RWS Studio update. This is a very annoying and stressful experience that happens most of the time when RWS has updates to install.
It happened while I was working on 22 May. I was preparing a return package when Studio suddenly started to shut down randomly, without displaying an error message. I restarted it several times, but it kept shutting down until I got the following message: 'You have to restart Studio to complete the update' (note: I was never notified that an update was ready to upload and/or install). My understanding is that Studio was installing the update while I was working in the programme.
After I restarted my computer (having to close all my active apps), Studio still refused to open.
BEHAVIOUR:
When I click on the Trados icon to open the program, the first window appears for 3–4 seconds (see screenshot), then disappears and the program doesn't open. There is no error message at all (see the screenshot below – that is as far as I can go). The image then disappears and Studio won't open.
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE DETAILS:
WINDOWS version: Windows 11 Home
Version: 24H2
Installed on: 9 January 2025
OS build: 26100.4061
TRADOS STUDIO version: I can’t be sure, as I can no longer open Studio! The last one was: Trados Studio 2022 SR2 17.2.12.19268.
COMPUTER: Lenovo X1 Carbon (10th Gen, Type 21CB, 21CC) laptop (ThinkPad).
Processor: 12th Gen Intel® Core i5-1240P 1.70 GHz
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.7 GB usable).
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
LATEST WINDOWS UPDATE: Windows cumulative update (update for Windows 11 24H2 (KB5055523) successfully installed on 14/04/2025.
ACTIONS TAKEN:
- All the 'standard' troubleshooting tips (renaming the usual files to 'old_etc', etc.
- Repair Studio (multiple times)
- Shut down and restart my computer
- Checked for updates (Windows and my computer)
- Ran 'scannow'
- Ran the DISM commands
- Reset Trados Studio to its default state
- Rename the configuration folders
- Navigate and renamed the following folders on the machine:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio\17
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Trados\Trados Studio\17
Rename these folders (e.g. 'Trados Studio_old').
- Delete the plugin folder.
I really need help at this point, as I feel I have exhausted all my resources. I am also wondering why this is still happening, as I know I am not the only one experiencing this stressful situation.
This time, I was unable to send the return packages to my client (an agency) on time. They were kind enough to accept the SDLXLIFF files instead, but this is not the quality of service that I want my clients to experience.
Please don't suggest I play around with the registry: I'm a translator, not a computer expert!
Your help would be appreciated.
Helene
