when trying to save the target file, I get the error message: Name cannot begin with the '<' character, hexadecimal value 0x3C. I read in another post that the problem has been fixed in Studio 2015. I have Studio 2015.
The source file is a PDF with a lot of formatting... What would be the best workaround?

I assume you saw the kb article?
You are correct, and it says the problem has been fixed in Studio 2015.
According to the article and from my experience, this problem is related to the comments in the SDLXLIFF file.
I would recommend deleting all comments from the document, saving and then trying to save target file.
(If you really need to preserve comments, you could make a backup copy of the SDLXLIFF somewhere to refer to the comments later).
