Why can't I open several projects in one go?

Hi,

I have a large translation outsource that is organised across 46 Trados Studio projects.

The only way to open all 46 projects in Trados Studio is for me to double click each project file one-by-one. This operation is time consuming and user unfriendly

At the end of this operation I have all the projects listed in the Project windows of Trados Studio - according to task manager I have one instance of Trados Studio running.

Why can't I open these projects as a single operation rather me have to laboriously work through  the list one-by-one? I understand it might take some time, but come on, help the user out eh?

Trados can obviously handle having this many projects loaded as that what I get when I do the loading myself. I'd love Trados Studio to do the loading for me.

Regards

Mark

Well, each project is a separated job. Opening several projects in one go is simply not possible.

However, you can create ONE single project, taking the sdlxliff files from the target folder of each project. To make the relations easier, create a subfolder in your new project for each source project. This way you will be able to copy the translated files to the target folder of the source project and overwrite the existing, untranslated ones with the translated ones. Run translation count batch task for each source project and create returning package. This is it. Very easy and efficient.

  • Hi Jerzy,

    Thanks for your reply.

Whilst it could be scripted, that's an awful lot of work to just be able to open several projects.

I'm not sure I understand your statement that "each project is a separated job"? If I can achieve the same outcome after 10 minutes of painful clicking, I can see why Trados Studio cannot do this also - it's only code at the end of the day?

This is by design. I do not know any other software being able to open several projects in one go. If we compare this for example with InDesign, where a file is a project, consisting of text and pictures, you also can only open one in one go.

A project is an internally closed structure with subfolders, TM settings, TB settings and so on, which may differ dramatically between projects. I fail to see a possibility, that Studio could take TMs, TBs and so on from two or more projects and treat the projects as they would be files. I'm afraid your view of what project is may be far to simple, bringing you to expect projects to behave like files. Unfortunately, this is (at least from what I understand) not in any way possible.

Whoever created that many projects with identical settings should recreate them into a single project. But if the settings of each single project differ, then even my previously described method is wrong, as in such case you cannot apply different settings for project files from different projects. So either you have one set of settings and can process all the files together or you really have to go project by project.

I'm wondering why you want to open 46 projects at the same time?  How does that make things more efficient for you?
