Closing tags of <ph> tags disappearing in return package

I am a worker of a translation company and writing regarding a critical issue we encountered with Trados Studio.

In one of our managed projects, we discovered that closing tags (</ph>) for <ph id="1">, <ph id="2">, <ph id="3">, etc., were massively deleted from the translated files within the return package. In some files, this affected approximately 100 locations.

Please note that these tags are not visible in the Trados editor interface, making it highly unlikely that translators accidentally deleted them due to human error.

Situation Details:

  • Source file format: xlf file (generated by customer's proprietary system)
  • Trados versions used:
    • Project Manager (myself): Trados Studio 2024 - 18.0.0.1013
    • Outsourced translation company: Trados Studio 2021 SR2 - 16.2.12.9338
    • Translator: Trados Studio 2022 SR2 - 17.2.9.18688
    • Reviewer: SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 - 15.2.8.3007

Package delivery process:
I (Project Manager) -> outsourced translation company -> translator -> outsourced translation company -> reviewer -> outsourced translation company -> I

Problem:
Closing tags (</ph>) for <ph id="1">, <ph id="2">, <ph id="3">, etc., were massively deleted from the translated files within the return package

 Questions:

  • Are there any known bugs where such tag deletion can occur due to specific Trados version combinations or operations?
  • Could specific settings or options during project creation, packaging, or return package creation potentially cause this issue?
  • Are there any Trados settings that can prevent this from recurring?

We would greatly appreciate your assistance in resolving this matter.

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific examples of the tags that are disappearing and clarify if any specific settings were used during the project setup.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out regarding the issue with the disappearing closing tags in your return package. Here’s a step-by-step approach to address your concerns:

    **Step 1:** **Identify the Tags**

Please specify which tags are disappearing (e.g., `<ph>`, `<x>`, etc.) and if there are any patterns in their disappearance. This information can help in diagnosing the issue.

**Step 2:** **Check for Known Issues**

There have been reports of tag handling issues in certain combinations of Trados versions, particularly with WSXZ packages exported from projects using Legacy/Idiom filters. Ensure that your project is not using these deprecated filters, as they can lead to unexpected behavior.

    **Step 3:** **Review Project Settings**

Examine the project settings used during the creation of the project and the return package. Ensure that tag verification is enabled in the project settings. This can help prevent tags from being deleted inadvertently.

**Step 4:** **Test with Different Versions**

If possible, try to replicate the issue using a different version of Trados Studio. For instance, if the project was created in Trados Studio 2024, check if the same issue occurs when using Trados Studio 2021 or 2022.

    **Step 5:** **Consult Documentation**

Refer to the RWS Documentation Center for any updates or patches related to tag handling in the versions you are using. Keeping your software updated can resolve many bugs.

    **Step 6:** **Preventive Measures**

To prevent this issue from recurring, consider implementing a verification step before finalizing the return package. This could involve running a tag verification check to ensure all necessary tags are present.

If you continue to experience issues, please provide any additional details or examples, and I would be happy to assist further.
