Object reference not set to an instance of an object

Hi,

I'm currently using Trados Studio 2024 on Windows 11 and keep encountering the error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The software frequently crashes and it's making it very difficult to work efficiently.

I already followed both suggested resets from the RWS Knowledge Base:

  • KB0039395 – Workaround 2
  • KB0039270

After renaming the specified folders, the error continues. I also got a new error once: "Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created."

I also had problem with a translation memory: I tried to update it as not all the translation results were show but once again I got the same error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.".

I never had this issue in previous Trados versions. This error message is getting very anoying.

Could you please help escalate this issue to the technical team?

Thanks in advance!

Johanna

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello Johanna,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing these issues with Trados Studio 2024. Let's try to resolve the "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error step by step:

    **Step 1:** **Check for Updates**

Make sure that you have the latest updates installed for Trados Studio. You can do this by opening the application, going to the 'Help' menu, and selecting 'Check for Updates'. Install any available updates.

**Step 2:** **Reset Trados Studio Settings**

Since you've already attempted some resets, let's ensure that the settings are completely reset. Follow these steps:

    1. Close all RWS applications.

    2. Navigate to the following folder:

      `C:\Users\[Your_Username]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\`

    3. Rename the folder corresponding to your version (e.g., `Studio17` for Trados Studio 2024) to `Studio17_old`.

    4. Restart Trados Studio.

    **Step 3:** **Repair Installation**

If the issue persists, consider repairing your installation:

    1. Open the Control Panel.

    2. Go to 'Programs and Features'.

    3. Find Trados Studio in the list, right-click on it, and select 'Repair'.

    4. Restart your computer after the repair is complete.

**Step 4:** **Check Translation Memory and Termbase**

Since you mentioned issues with the translation memory, check if it might be corrupted:

    1. Go to Project Settings -> Language Pairs -> Translation Memory.

    2. Disable the TMs one by one to see if the crash persists.

    3. If disabling a TM resolves the issue, that TM may need to be recreated.

    **Step 5:** **Reinstall Trados Studio**

As a last resort, if none of the above steps work, consider uninstalling and then reinstalling Trados Studio. Make sure to back up your settings and resources before doing this.

If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, please let me know, and we can explore further options. I hope this answer addressed your question.
