"Failed to add window command bar exceptions" error message prevents Studio from opening

"Failed to add window command bar exceptions" error message prevents Studio from opening. I have tried everything: repair, uninstalling, reinstalling, article 6625 from the KB (since I also got the Message Type Initializer 'xxx' threw an exception. Nothing Works!! I really need to use Trados ASAP - I have a huge work load waiting!! Currently using 2015 Version. This happened when I started translating a Project received in a package - Studio shut down, and I have simply not been able to open it after that. It starts the loading, but instead of opening, it gives me this Message. PLEASE HELP ME!! Thanks :)

  • Hi Ellen,

You may have to do a Studio reset and it might help. Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\12.0.0.0\

    Regards

  • Hi Paul, thank you for your suggestion, I really appreciate it, however, unfortunately this did not work! I still got the same Message - sorry, I noticed I have actually written "exceptions" at the end - it should say "extensions" (Failed to add window command bar extensions". I also get the another message saying "The Type Initiator for 'Sdl.Enterprise2.Platform.Client.IdentityModel.IdentityInfoCache' threw an exception".
I really hope you can help me - I have a huge work load I really need to start on asap! Thanks!
  • Hi Ellen,

ok - can you try renaming the projects.xml file as well? You'll find this here:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Projects\projects.xml

This will remove all the projects from your list in Studio (won't delete them, just removes them from the list). If Studio starts you can add the projects back again one at a time by Opening Project (Ctrl+O in Projects View) and selecting the sdlproj file for each project in your Studio Projects folder.

If the same problem happens when you open the package project then you probably have two choices I think:

    1. Open the package again and pretranslate from your TM to get back to where you were, or
    2. Open the sdlxliff files in the project separately and send them back to your client separately when done

    Perhaps this will help?

    Regards

  • Hi Paul, thanks again - however I already deleted this file... And I also have tried to rename all the XMLs in the 12.0.0 folder before. Nothing works! At this point it does not actually matter what happens to any of the projects, that's not a problem, as I have all the necessary TMs in order to run the files through them for possible retranslations. I JUST REALLY NEED TO OPEN & USE STUDIO... Getting pretty desperate here... By the way, I also have Studio 2014 still installed, same issue there...
  • If this happens to Studio 2014 as well perhaps worth trying something a little more drastic. Can you try renaming this folder and restart:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\

This makes changes that affect both versions but the products should still restart.

    Regards

  • If it still won't restart after that can you uninstall both products, and MultiTerm, and then manually delete these:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\

    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Project Templates\

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Plugin.Bookmarks.xml

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Plugin.Symbols.xml

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Studio 2015\Projects\projects.xml

I think that will clear out anything that may be left and associated with the application.

Then reinstall Studio 2015 and try again. Note that you probably won't be able to use Studio 2014 again after this unless you have a separate license for that.

    I hope this helps!

  • Hi Paul, this solution WORKED!!! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help - and wish you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
    Best regards,
    Ellen
  • Just for the record, for others that might be in trouble like I was - the solution was to rename the SDL folder "c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\" and restart :)
  • Glad to hear this... and a merry xmas to you too!

  • Hi Paul,

We recently experienced this issue and the culprit was a missing/corrupt font "MS Arial Unicode" in the Windows System.
Once we reinstalled the font everything worked normally.

    Hope this helps,
    Jose
