VSD file (Visio file from client)

Hi,

It seems that Studio 2014 (or maybe all versions) doesn't support VSD files.

I've installed "TradosStudioVisioVDXFilter_V2.0.0.zip", but it doesn't contains VSD file.

How can we create a project and translate the VSD file?

Your prompt reply would be much appreciated...

Best Regards

  • Hi Fouad

Studio does not support Visio files by default.

You have two possibilities for translating Visio files with Studio:

    1. Buy the software "SysFilter for Visio". This third-party SW will allow you to extract the text from the Visio files as either RTF or XML and translate them in Studio.

    2. Buy the Open Exchange app "Visio Filter" and install it. This Studio plug-in will allow you to translate .VDX files directly in Studio.

In both cases, you will need to either have Visio installed in order to create the .VDX file or ask your client to give you a .VDX file, as Studio cannot handle native .VSD files directly.

The first solution has the advantage that it is a separate piece of SW, which does not integrate directly with Studio and therefore is not dependent on your version of Studio (no need to upgrade when you upgrade Studio).

If you need more detailed information, feel free to contact me directly (j'espère que tu n'a pas égaré mon adresse de courriel:-))

  • I have downloaded the Visio Filter from here:
    http://www.translationzone.com/openexchange/app/microsoftvisiofilterforsdltradosstudio-576.html

But the problem is that I have a VSD file and not VDX file.
I tried to save the VSD file as VSDX file, but the Visio file got corrupted. So i need to stick with the VSD file (or VDX file, hopefully it will help).

You must have the VDX as the filters available only work on text based content. The VSD is a binary file.

Don't assume... most Visio files have shape data.  If you can export it to VDX it may still be a simple task.

If you're having problems, your client can't provide the VDX either and you only have one file why don't you translate it in Visio using T-Windows for Clipboard?  Then you can still use your Studio TMs at least.
