edit

During the editing process, I noticed something: when I try to add some words or numbers to an existing sentence, the new characters I type replace (or 'overwrite') the characters that are already there.

How can I fix this?

AI has already answered, but in fairly complicated way. Watch the right bottom corner of Trados Studio. If you see "OVR" there, you pressed the insert key on your keyboard. Press it again, the text should now change to "INS" and you will not be overwriting your existing text. The insert key on your keyboard simply toggles this behaviour.
