How to disable AutoCorrect from changing a., b., c. at the beginning of a segment?

I can't seem to find the setting,

but all I want to do is disable AutoCorrect for a., b., c., etc.

Right now when I type "a." and hit a space, this is what happens:

I looked under exceptions, but this option does not seem to be available?

  • Hi Jesse

You seem to have discovered a bug. It seems as if all the exceptions in the category "First letter" don't work.
Typing "abbr." or "abs." also capitalizes the A once you type the space.
I guess this needs to be fixed.

However, you can temporarily work around this by adding "a" (without the period) in the tab Other corrections" (don't add "a." because it will not accept it, probably because it already exists in the tab "First letter"). After you have done this, typing "a." will not capitalize.

  • Hi Jesse and Walter,

I think this works the way it's supposed to, i.e., don't capitalize the first letter of the word that comes AFTER these abbreviations. If the abbreviations appear at the beginning of a segment they will be capitalized as any other regular word, unless they are entered in the Other corrections as Walter has explained.
  • Hi Nora

Very interesting remark, which proves that "intuitive" doesn't always mean the same to everyone (which makes the concept "intuitive" basically useless:-)). The labels may be interpreted differently by various users:-)

It seems that you are right, the exception list "First letter" contains words that should not be capitalised if they follow one of the abbreviations in the list. At least, the behaviour seems to confirm this.

Based on the fact that the AutoCorrect module in Studio should be the same as the one in MS Word, I tested this in Word and the behaviour is similar, with one big exception: the first letter is already capitalised when you type the period and not only after the space, which means that even if you enter the word that should not be capitalised in the list "Other corrections", it will still be capitalised, whereas this is not the case in Studio. So, there seems to be a slight difference in behaviour between the two modules.

I also checked the help in MS Word, but it doesn't seem to go to this level of details, which is a pity because we would like to know what the intention of the developer was.

  • Hi Walter and Nora,

Thanks for the help. I now understand that the "First Letter" tab is for exceptions that come *after* the words in the list.
However, when I tested in Word , its was smart enough to know not to capitalize "a." but only things like "the" at the start of the sentence.
I will use the "Other Corrections" list although now "a" with a space following is no longer capitalized, so I think there could be some usability improvements made with the AutoCorrect feature.

    A couple of examples:
    1. Allow periods and other symbols in the "Other Corrections" list
    2. Allow regular expressions to ignore a group of expressions. I don't want to have to type "a.", "b." and so on...
