Can I receive a file in Across, work on it in Trados, then convert it back to Across without losing any data?

I'm just beginning in Trados, so I don't know much yet.  ;)

I've been asked to work on a file in Across, which I don't have.

Does an Across file convert well into Trados, and vice versa?

Only if you would be able to export a TMX or XML out there, you could work on it. However Across until 6.0 is a "closed environment". This means, that usually in a customer project the rights of translator are limited to type the text and go.
My advice: run as far you can from Across, there is no worse software on the market. Across is the only software I know, which does treat translator as a slave.
