Trados Studio 2024 - Extremely frequent crashes

Hi,

Since some months I am experiencing extremely frequent crashes of SDL Studio 2024, occurring randomly whenever I am working in the editor. I paste below one example of crash report from Windows Event Viewer (Italian locale):

Nome applicazione con errore: SDLTradosStudio.exe, versione: 18.1.3.6657, timestamp: 0xc97e357c

I have updated Studio to the last available release (currently Trados Studio 2024 SR1 - 18.1.3.6657), but apparently to no avail. I also tried deinstalling/reinstalling and repairing the program but the issues are going on.

Do you have any hint/suggestion on how to diagnose the root cause/overcome this issue?

Best regards,

Davide

Would you please give us also the parameter of your PC?

Do you have any plugins installed? Did you use any project templates from previous versions? Did you possibly use an user profile from a previous version?

  • Hi Jerzy,

I work with a HP laptop running Windows 11. No plugins installed. If you need any other parameters, please letme know.

Please consider that the crashes normaly occur when working on specific translation packages coming from one of my customers, with big TM and TB attached.

    Best regards,

    Davide

How old is your laptop? Crashes with big TMs and TBs would suggest an overloaded hardware.

  • I bought it in October 2023, i.e. two years ago. These are the specs:

    Processor: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1195G7 @ 2.90GHz (2.92 GHz)

    Installed RAM: 16.0 GB

Please consider that I also use other CAT tools and various applications which are highly demanding and I have never experienced any further issue so far.

    Best regards,

    Davide

Thank you. The PC seems to be powerful enough. And as this happens with packages from a certain provider, I'd check their version.

When you receive such package, please go to Project settings and check the TM there. Should this be marked with an orange triangle, it needs an update. In this case please simply run an TM update from the Project settings. Also reorganise the termbases from the package. This can be done in MultiTerm.

I would also suggest changing the way of working:

    • Create your own TM for this customer
    • Copy the TM and the TBs from the package to the same folder, where you created your own TM
    • Create a new project
    • Add the sdlxliff files from the target folder of your received package
    • Add your own TM in first place, select it to be updated
    • Add customer TM(s) as additional TMs, do not select them to be updated
    • Add all TBs you may need, including those from the customer
    • Prepare the package including a creation of project TMs. This will extract the necessary parts from big TMs, making the work faster and more reliable
    • Translate the job and perform any checks needed
    • Run the batch "Update main translation memories" from the Batch task menu
    • Create a project template based on this project for future use. This will make the project creation next time very easy
    • Copy the translated sdlxliff files from the target folder of your project and paste them in the target folder of the package, replacing the original files there
    • Run the batch "Translation count" in the received project
    • Create return package and send it back

Even if the process seems to be complicated, it is very simple. The advantages are huge:

    • You will work with your translations from your TM in first place, which you can trust more than the translations from customer TM
    • The TMs used for work will be small and work fast
    • Your TM will be permanently updated with checked translations after each project
    • No raw translation will be entered in your TM

  • Dear Jerzy,

The TM is updated, and also the TB does not seem to need any reorganizing.

Thank you also for the workflow suggestion, but unfortunately it is not feasible in this case, since it is a requirement for me to work with the project packages the customer provides.

What I need is to understand why these crashes keep occurring with my Trados installation and how to solve them, because it is very difficult to handle a project with such issues.

Could you help me with that?

    Thank you in advance!

The workflow does include working with customer packages, but in a slightly modified and much more feasible way for us freelancers. But this is not the place to elaborate more on thi.

What you can always do: run the "Populate project translation memories" in the customer project. This will create local small TMs, which should cause less crashes.

You can also check the version of Trados Studio your customer is using. If the version differs much from yours, not only TMs, but other settings, especially file types may be problematic.

Unfortunately, I am not able to help more. The described way of working saves me hours of trouble since many years and this is my only idea here.

  • Hi,

I do not know if that helps, but I will give you my experience. I had the same issue, most likely my computer was "affected" by this issue after I switched from Windows 10 to 11. From that point on, Studio 2024 crashed continously, nothing helped.

My solution was to remove all Trados programms from my computer, not only Studio, but also Multiterm. Also all previous versions.

Then restarted and installed Studio 2024 again. Since then, I do not have this issue anymore.

Maybe this also helps on your side.

    Regards,

    Johannes
