Variables not Saved in TM

When in Trados 2024 I add extra variables to a TM that already contains one variable, and I open via Home > Project Settings > Translation Memories > click on actual TM > Settings > Language Resources > Source Language > Click on pencil > Type variable > Click Add > Click OK > Click OK, they are not recognized as placeables in my file (and no reindexing dialog appears, a functionality which did work for me in 2022). The TM in question is not open in Translation Memories View. Even immediately after adding variables, when I reopen the Language Resources dialog and check for them, they are not there.

When I close the project, open the TM, and add them there, I get the reindexing dialog to appear and the Variables are added after that.

Question improvement suggestion: Provide a clear distinction between the expected behavior (variables being recognized immediately) and the actual behavior (variables not being recognized) to enhance clarity.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

Hello! It seems you're experiencing an issue with adding variables to your Translation Memory (TM) in Trados Studio 2024. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and resolve the problem:

    **Step 1:** Verify TM Settings

    - Go to **Project Settings** > **Language Pairs** > **All Language Pairs** > **Translation Memory and Automated Translation**.

    - Ensure that the TM you are using is set to update correctly. Check that the options for 'Enabled' and 'Update' are ticked.

    **Step 2:** Add Variables Correctly

    - Open the TM settings by navigating to **Home** > **Project Settings** > **Translation Memories**.

    - Click on the actual TM, then go to **Settings** > **Language Resources** > **Source Language**.

    - Click the pencil icon to edit, type your variable, and click **Add**. Make sure to click **OK** to save your changes.

    **Step 3:** Reindex the TM

    - After adding variables, if they are not recognized, try closing the project and reopening the TM directly in the Translation Memories view.

    - Check if the reindexing dialog appears. If it does, allow it to complete, as this may help in recognizing the newly added variables.

    **Step 4:** Confirm Segments

    - If you have previously translated segments, you may need to re-confirm them for the new variables to take effect. This ensures that the TM recognizes the variables in the context of the segments.

**Step 5:** Test with a New TM

    - If the issue persists, consider creating a new TM and adding the variables there to see if the problem continues. This can help determine if the original TM is causing the issue.

If you follow these steps and still encounter problems, it may be beneficial to check for any updates or patches for Trados Studio 2024, as software updates can often resolve bugs or issues related to functionality.
