which application is chosen

Question

I have recently purchased SDL Trados Studio 2015 but have also the starter version on my computer, which expires in a few days. 
 I got a package sent from a client and wanted to open it in my recently bought Trados but it keeps importing the package to the old starter version. How can I choose in which Trados is is imported or select my new version of Trados 2015?

Windows always associates the file extension with the last version of the program that you installed. 
 
I guess that your Starter version is 2014 otherwise the installation of Studio 2015 would have overwritten your Starter version. Given that the license for your Starter version expires soon, I guess the simplest would be to uninstall your 2014 Starter version. 
 
If you do not want to do this, you could also run a repair of Studio 2015 and this should reestablish the correct file associations.
